master bathroom redo: would you rather have...

Anonymous
I don't get ready at the same time as my husband, but I am glad to have my own sink so I don't have to look at his toothpaste blobs and whisker bits when I get ready.

I can't figure out why people would need so much storage instead -- how much lotion do you have, anyway?

Double sinks. No question. My husband "forgets" to rinse all the tiny hairs from when he shaves. I rejoiced the day we moved out of our tiny apartment and could finally have double sinks.

I'm so glad we have two bathrooms so we don't have to use sinks at the same time in the same space. I like my privacy!

Me personally, I would prefer more cabinets and more counter space over two sinks - but I've watched enough HGTV to know that two sinks are important to a lot of people. I don't know how you factor that into your reno plans. I would be inclined to just renovate the way you like and let future owners make whatever changes they like, but I am also terrible with money.

Umm very very few people have 2 master bathrooms in their McMansion.

DH and I have no trouble sharing our master bathroom in the morning and night. We enjoy talking about our days and plans we're making. It's not a hardship. It's like pillowtalk before we get in bed. We have two separate vanities across the bathroom from each other.

I am the PP and I think you misunderstood. We don't live in a McMansion - we live in a 1950s ranch house. And I didn't say we have two master bathrooms. I said we have two bathrooms. Amazing how we are able to walk out of our bedroom and down the hall to that second bathroom when necessary! I know that seems like an *insane* notion, right? Who can possibly walk that far??

Anyway, I would rather have storage than two sinks. I do not care to use the bathroom at the same time as my husband. YMMV and probably does.

Double sinks.

You could also do something like this if you have the room.

Do you not have kids? My kids are getting ready in the other bathrooms and would be upset if DH was hogging their bathroom.

NP here who votes for more storage! Double sinks are weird and rarely used simultaneously. It like the old HGTVobsession with granite for resale - makes everyone think it’s good, when it’s not always the best option, for resale or otherwise.

Why would we get ready together? Weird.

Because we go to sleep and get up for work at the same time? Do you not? I see my neighbors all leave around the same time for work also. I am in the bathroom from 6:30-7 every morning getting ready. Where else would dh be if I'm there alone?

We have been married 20 years, we rarely are in the bathroom at the same time. If he is in there, I stagger my usage. We have a walled off toilet and two sinks. We wake at different times, I also go to bed later. I just prefer being the only one in the washroom.

Looks like you are in the minority.

We don't have kids, but we do have a lot of houseguests - then the second bathroom in the house goes to the guests (who also manage to get by without a double vanity!). There's a half bath in the garage my husband often retreats to then, but even without that we'd be fine I think? I don't know - I guess I never thought of double sinks as solving all the problems associated with having fewer bathrooms than there are people in the house. What happens in your house when it's time to shower, or poop? How come everyone is doing sink stuff at the same time but manages to time their showering and pooping so that there isn't a traffic jam?

Anyway, glad you have a situation that works for you!

Yeah, I do feel like I see double sinks on HGTV way more often than I see them in real life.

Anonymous wrote:I just went to a design trend workshop at a design convention and counter top is weighing as more important than the dual sinks - and even when space is not small - it is a design trend over the more is more. While I still dream of my own bathroom (two in master - though my DH thinks I am wacky!) I think if space was an issue - I would go for more counter space over second sink

My parents house had great counter space growing up. They had to rebuild after a tornado and put in a much smaller vanity in the guest bathroom. It drives me crazy! I knock everything into the sink just trying to get ready. I would gladly take one large sink in the middle, counter space on either side, drawers underneath, and a large and well lit mirror.

I'm a fan of the middle privacy column of storage. We get ready at the same time and have a two person shower when we need it, though we rarely shower in the AM.

We don't have that many products that we use so a couple drawers on either side is great and towels/paper/candy in the center.

Anonymous wrote:I assume that's a false front for aesthetic purposes. I wouldn't use this exact design anyway; I was posting it for general visual purposes to show what I meant by dual cabinets flanking a single sink. I agree, that would be the world's most useless drawer.

If the aesthetic you're going for is "wow, that's ridiculous, that drawer is useless," then they sure nailed it.

We have double sinks with storage columns on both sides (smaller than the ones pictured. Plenty of space on the counter (though that's a mixed bag, since it can lead to clutter).
