I handle shrieking children like dogs. Tell them in a very stern voice "quiet" and they stop yelling.

And of course the worst is the kids who yell, "Mom! Mom! Mom! Hey, Mom! Watch this! Mom! MOM!" while their mom ignores them, usually she's on her phone.

Screaming and shrieking is not "just what kids do! *throws up hands*" My grandparents did not allow my mother to scream and shriek willy-nilly, my mother didn't allow me, and I don't allow my kids.

I was taught from a very early age that shrieking was for when something was wrong and I needed an adult RIGHT NOW. I was told that if I screamed like that, a grownup would come running, and if nothing was wrong when they got there, there would be Consequences. And I learned about the Boy Who Cried Wolf. Because it was jarring to the nerves of those around me and therefore rude and thoughtless. When I grew up, I thought this was a good philosophy and decided to employ it myself.

It's never too early to start learning to think about the impact of your behavior on those around you. There are plenty of ways to have fun as a kid without making obnoxious, ear-splitting noises that leave the adults around you wondering if you're just being inconsiderate or if you're hurt.

Op, is there a shallow end and a deep end? It's too bad the parents don't create a natural kid zone by keeping the kids in the shallow end with their pool noodles and shenanigans. But no shrieking. Never.
