Why does everyone have their kids two years apart?

I had the first at 33 and second at 37, so I had age somewhat on my side...I didn't feel desperate to have the second. Also, I wasn't sure I wanted a second for a long time...not until after the first turned 3.

I would have felt so old having my first kid at 33.

How old were you?

Is your peer group fairly uneducated? Not one of my friends had a baby before 30 due to advanced degrees and careers.

Basically this.

See, this is why it's totally individual. I think 3 years is PERFECT and 2 years may drive me crazy. To each her own.

My kids are 5 years apart, and I think it is fab. They are 19 and 14 now. I really like having one high schooler at a time, lol. And mine get along well and do play together quite often--soccer, basketball cards, board games. It helps perhaps that they are the same sex.

There's no hard and fast rule on this. It depends on the kids, the parents, the circumstances.

Oh, you guys are such insufferable snobs. I have an Ivy League degree, a MA, a career I love - and had my first baby at 29. I know there are others like me out there.

Yes, DH and I are like you. We had our first when I was 29 and he was 27 (which now sounds so young to me!) and we are both Ivy League grads with advanced degrees. We just met in college so we were totally ready by the time we were in our late 20s (well, I was in my late 20s... and my clock was ticking...) We are not even remotely religious or traditional either. We saw a first wave of friends have kids at around the same time, but it was mostly those who, like us, had been already dating/married for 8+ years.

Ours are 3.5 years apart and I love it, I always thought 2 years apart was way too close together (although, to each her own and all). If we have a third we'll also space that one 3 years apart, so I'll have had one at 29, the next at 33, the last at 36.

Wow, we could be twins! I had my second at 33 as well - 3.5 year age gap is the best! But we are done with two for sure.

Mine aren't almost 2.5 years apart to the day. I just realized I wanted my kids to grow up together, and didn't want to go through the diaper phase when my older kid was four or five. Also, I just kinda wanted to do pregnancy back to back so I could then focus on losing weight and being fit (I gained a lot with both pregnancies).

Not the previous poster but I am 29 and have a 2 year old and 1 more on the way . Both my husband and I are college educated with Master's degrees and I am preparing to go back for another degree after this baby arrives . It works for us

My mom had four kids, each two years apart. Her church forbade birth control, and this is how nature worked out. I'm sticking with one, but if we'd decided to have another, we wouldn't have started trying until our dd was 3ish.

I have a law degree and am a practicing lawyer. Ivy-educated. First kid at 29, third (and last) at 33. Sorry to disappoint.
