VA governors race Democratic primary

I voted for GWB twice back when I was still buying what the GOP was selling. Then I switched parties & voted for Obama twice. I've been solidly in the liberal camp for over a decade. So I'm quite comfortable with Northam, because he's like me! I appreciate his honesty. Do I regret my GWB votes? Absolutely. But they don't change who I am now.

Voted Northam in absentee voting already.

I just can't help but think given his history, Perriello is "progressive" for the sake of strategy only. The whole Bernie endorsement, etc. He's trying to use anti-Trump inertia to his advantage but none of it seems genuine, if that makes sense. He only decided to run in December after the election.

Maybe Perriello genuinely is a complete liberal, and maybe his nonliberal positions in the past were just faked for the sake of political necessity. I could accept that. I certainly spent the weeks after the election pondering how to move the country to a more progressive, more rational stance.

But what I came up with is doing it by inches and nudges: get more progressive people into local office. Support the more-liberal candidates in close races nationwide. Some guy who lost his Congressional seat after one term, now deciding to go after the highest position in his barely-blue state (the one where his own district booted him)? Honey, no.

But Ed Gillespie says thanks.

Perriello can't beat Gillespie.

And Hillary is the only one who could beat Trump? Tired of hearing Democrats talk about progressive candidates being "unelectable" in the general. Northam should be lightyears ahead of Perriello in the polls, but I'm seeing a close race with a lot of undecideds. Perriello is raising money from all over the country, and has come from far behind. Both of them could beat Gillespie according to the polls

AP and NYT have called it for Northam.

I reaaallllly hope Trashbag Stewart doesn't win on the R side. He's an embarrassment.

Wow, the polling was worse than I thought. They said Northam and Perriello would be close, and that Gillespie was way ahead.

That Stewart is this close to heading to the general election in Va makes me sick

Republican Party is dead if neo-Confederate white trash like Stewart (by way of Minnesota) can get nominated in VA (both Democratic candidates are getting far more votes than Gillespie or Stewart).

VA will soon be a one Party state (D). Good to have sane Ds in there.

Like it or not, this is the tack the GOP is taking.

Stewart

I voted for Northham, and I'm glad he pulled it off. I'm confident he can beat Gillespie.

Nope, because Gillespie won.

I think it is possible to change and I have some sympathy for Northam there. Your story is a compelling example of why. My issue with Northam is that the reason he said he voted twice for Bush was because he "wan't paying attention to politics" then. HE WAS A VA STATE SENATOR!

Sorry for yelling, but holy hell. For that reason alone I couldn't vote for him and I am disappointed that he won. McAulliffe has been bad for Virginia, particularly the these toll concessions that look shady. I expect in a few years they will be politically toxic but they are for 70 years! If Northam is to follow McAuliffe's legacy, I am not sure that Virginia will be liveable in the long term.

I'm entertained that Nutjob Corey is refusing to "fall in line" like a good Republican and support Gillepsie. I hope he starts his own Confederate Flag party and runs as a third party candidate. Someone should suggest it to him.
