I just can't help but think given his history, Perriello is "progressive" for the sake of strategy only. The whole Bernie endorsement, etc. He's trying to use anti-Trump inertia to his advantage but none of it seems genuine, if that makes sense. He only decided to run in December after the election.
Maybe Perriello genuinely is a complete liberal, and maybe his nonliberal positions in the past were just faked for the sake of political necessity. I could accept that. I certainly spent the weeks after the election pondering how to move the country to a more progressive, more rational stance. But what I came up with is doing it by inches and nudges: get more progressive people into local office. Support the more-liberal candidates in close races nationwide. Some guy who lost his Congressional seat after one term, now deciding to go after the highest position in his barely-blue state (the one where his own district booted him)? Honey, no. But Ed Gillespie says thanks.
