WHERE will you retire?

Uruguay, probably Montevideo.
Second choices Slovakia or Montenegro.

Considering that I won't retire for more than a decade and then hopefully have lots of time to enjoy it, one of my big considerations is climate change and sea levels over the next 40 years or so.

That's a deal breaker for me for coastal areas, much as I love them.

Also, while I hate the cost of living and the traffic, there's a lot I like about living in the DC area. At this point I don't think I'd want to transplant myself somewhere that I don't already have any ties and start all over.

I don't get it. We have relatives that live there and it gives me the creeps. Swampy, sprawling, and full of empty-headed conservatives.

I understand that you don't care the the topography of a place. However, Hillary supporters were alive and well in our community. I agree that their are empty headed, I'll ad angry and uneducated, conservatives out there. But they're everywhere. In this past election they were much more vocal than Trump supporters. Maybe us Hillary supporters did too little too late for our candidate.

Not really.

Southport, NC. If you are willing to give up walkable, St. James fits your bill.

Either a ground level beach condo in Florida or California OR somewhere in the Caribbean (Costa Rica, Belize, etc). I'm not concerned about being far from friends/family...I'll make new friends and airplanes are for just that purpose, no way am I staying in the DC area shoveling snow when I'm retired.

Somewhere north of here in a blue bubble of a blue state
With a view (don't care if it is ocean, lake, mountain, pastoral or cityscape- I want to be able to see way more than 1/4 of a mile)
Probably lower COL
Near cracker jack healthcare system
Walkable to coffee
Within 90 minutes of decent airport
In a state that has ACA type benefit options as I will not be eligible for Medicare (if it still exists) when we move
Nearby college or university a plus
Where potable water is not scarce

I would love for it to be near our kids, but they will not be old enough to have permanently settled for us to do that

I think we would be best friends!

We heard about PV through some of the blogs I was reading. We thought we would check it out as a place to retire. When I booked our flight to Jacksonville, I thought JACKSONVILLE, not a city that was on our radar.
Jacksonville is about 30 miles from the GA border. Thus, great weather. It comes with all the financial benefits of living in FL, but it's not south FL. Yes, the summers are hot, we noticed similar to D.C., with a great ocean breeze.

We chose a community called Nocatee. We drive around in a golf cart to shop, go out to eat, the gym, the pool, friends, etc.

Within Nocatee is the 55 and over community Del Webb.

It's gated/guarded and has an amazing lifestyle. Folks here are from all over which keeps it interesting.

We are also 20 minutes from St Augustine, filled with history and great restaurants.

My husband and I are a bit impulsive and are known to just go with our gut with big decisions. We came down to PV and started building a home within 48 hours of being here. Then we went back to MD and kept asking ourselves, what did we just do!?
That was 4 years ago. No regrets. And our kids love coming down here.

To answer that ever looming question, where do we want to live.....we went in blogs, just like you and found this place.

Yes, Nocatee is the exact community we are looking at. Glad to hear this!

6+ months in Florida - not sure where yet but most likely the southern half of the state. This will be our residence.

Up to 6 months somewhere else between Quebec City and DC. We might mix it up for the first few years renting and see what pleases us. I expect most of my family will be on the East Coast, so we should be near at least some of them for part of the year.

Planning on living in a beat up apartment in Brooklyn with a sink full of dirty dishes while I watch the Mets on TV wearing a wife beater with pizza stains on it.

I'm thinking to get two modest places - one north, one south, so I don't have to deal with the worst weather. The one nice thing about the absurd real estate prices here is that I can sell the big house here and have many options.
