WHERE will you retire?

For those of you who are moving away (so far: most, if not all, PPs), do you have kids? If so, are you planning to move away from them and future grandkids? Does that affect your future location at all?

My DH and I are planning on retiring in Spain. I speak Spanish and it's a very inexpensive place to retire. Presumably our son and daughter will not live in Spain, but we'll build in lots of time we'll visit with them.

Somewhere north of here in a blue bubble of a blue state
With a view (don't care if it is ocean, lake, mountain, pastoral or cityscape- I want to be able to see way more than 1/4 of a mile)
Probably lower COL
Near cracker jack healthcare system
Walkable to coffee
Within 90 minutes of decent airport
In a state that has ACA type benefit options as I will not be eligible for Medicare (if it still exists) when we move
Nearby college or university a plus
Where potable water is not scarce

I would love for it to be near our kids, but they will not be old enough to have permanently settled for us to do that.

We heard about PV through some of the blogs I was reading. We thought we would check it out as a place to retire. When I booked our flight to Jacksonville, I thought JACKSONVILLE, not a city that was on our radar.
Jacksonville is about 30 miles from the GA border. Thus, great weather. It comes with all the financial benefits of living in FL, but it's not south FL. Yes, the summers are hot, we noticed similar to D.C., with a great ocean breeze.

We chose a community called Nocatee. We drive around in a golf cart to shop, go out to eat, the gym, the pool, friends, etc.

Within Nocatee is the 55 and over community Del Webb.

It's gated/guarded and has an amazing lifestyle. Folks here are from all over which keeps it interesting.

We are also 20 minutes from St Augustine, filled with history and great restaurants.

My husband and I are a bit impulsive and are known to just go with our gut with big decisions. We came down to PV and started building a home within 48 hours of being here. Then we went back to MD and kept asking ourselves, what did we just do!?
That was 4 years ago. No regrets. And our kids love coming down here.

To answer that ever looming question, where do we want to live.....we went in blogs, just like you and found this place.

Whether or not it is expensive will depend on where in Spain you live. Parts of Spain are extremely expensive, others not so much.

What will you do about healthcare?

Moving to the other side of the earth. No kids. My family is not from the US, but a lot of us immigrated here in the 70's/80's. Doesn't really feel like home anymore.

And clearly half the country doesn't want us here either.

Nocatee is such a great community! We lived in Julington Creek (loved it!) when the building started on Nocatee. It stalled for a while during the housing crisis then exploded! Fantastic schools (as long as you buy in the St Johns part of Nocatee), low cost of living, close to the beach, close to shopping, ..... We wanted more land so Nocatee wasn't an option. However if we still had kids in the house, we definitely would have moved to Nocatee. Love that water park so much! And the new zip line is opening soon. Right?

Right now, my thought is Asheville, NC. Might change my mind in 15-20 years though when I actually do retire.

Help me - near beach/bay, coffee shop, tennis, walkable, cute, a little history, proximity to airport (hour) healthcare I guess, mix of views for discussions but definitely a few red state types. Affordable.

Half the year in Cape Cod (already have the house) and half the year here.

I don't get it. We have relatives that live there and it gives me the creeps. Swampy, sprawling, and full of empty-headed conservatives.

I lived there for six years. My experience was the exact opposite.

I understand that you don't care the the topography of a place. However, Hillary supporters were alive and well in our community. I agree that their are empty headed, I'll ad angry and uneducated, conservatives out there. But they're everywhere. In this past election they were much more vocal than Trump supporters. Maybe us Hillary supporters did too little too late for our candidate.
