Netflix / Amazon Prime - what to watch recommendations: strong female leads, not dark?

It's not a light show, though. Not dark exactly but so many sad storylines that stuck with me. I had to stop watching after a while.

I find childbirth and complications therein much more depressing than clones and imaginary monsters.

Not only that but there are other storylines about people in the town that were incredibly sad. I found it to be a quality show in many ways but it just sat too heavy with me. Definitely not a good binge-watching option.

OP, the only ones I would add are:

Orange is the New Black -- same creator as Weeds; supporting cast has some great, strong women (but not necessarily the lead..and her role diminishes over the course of the series)

The Killing -- probably too dark, but that was a really excellent show centered around a smart and fiercely independent (and of course troubled) woman

Big Love (I believe you can get this on amazon) -- focuses on the sister wives as strong women and the casting is just perfect

Agreed, although something about it being in the past makes it easier for me to swallow. Like, that wouldn't have happened today thanks to all the technology we have now. Only ONE episode still haunts me to the point of being very upset when I think back on it.

And I love the character development of the teenaged girls. You have to power through the first 4-5 episodes before it gets really good. But when it gets good, it gets really good.

Great show. Not my usual cup of tea but I loved it.

Best. Show. Ever.

+1

When does it get to the point of being the best show ever? DH and I finally quit on Season 1 because, while we enjoyed it, it was just dragging out. 22 episodes of a full-length show is a lot of Season 1-ness and felt stale after awhile. I'm guessing there was a long break st some point when it actually aired.

My husband loves Turn, but I just could not get into it.

+1 I was actually going to suggest Big Love too.
