I'm the poster who referenced "several" biracial kids. I don't know OP's child's ethnic background, other than biracial. However, just for reference, 3 of the 4 ESs in RM have between 6 and 7% of their kids who are multi-racial (according to At A Glance). The 4th ES, which has < 5% multi-racial enrollment, is a school with a Hispanic enrollment of more than 60%.
The kids I know at our ES who are biracial have African American and white parents and Asian American and white parents. I don't know any kids from African American and Asian American parents, but maybe I don't know all the kids at my school. And when I say "several", it is far more than "a handful of" kids total. So if OP wants a diverse place, her child won't be alone. I don't know about the commute to Burtonsville. Silver Spring /Takoma Park might be a good diverse fit and a better drive for her, but I can't comment with any knowledge on the schools there. |

No offense and it's maybe because I live in a more "diverse" area but I don't really understand the whole distinction about biracial.
And in the last couple of days there have been several threads about biracial kids, couples, etc. So don't know if someone is out there trolling. Unless it's a more homogeneous area, mixed ethnicities are pretty common and I don't think many people think much about it. Maybe in the past it was a big deal or if you're in a homogeneous area. In our little loop of homes for example we have multiple families of mixed ethnicities and of various combinations. The cutest/curious would probably be a couple close to retirement and mainly because it's not a common combination and you would think that it was frowned upon in their younger days. But for the rest, we don't even really think about it. So I kind of rolled my eyes too when seeing that comment about how previous poster's school has some/handful of students with mixed ethnicities. But didn't get a chance to write a snarky reply. But nowadays in this area I'd like to think that most people don't really think anything when they see an interracial couple (in regards to the other thread about a Bangladesh wife and European husband looking for a place to live) or a kid of mixed ethnicity. Yeah there are still bigots out there and will be dumb acts and comments and there are areas that are probably better to avoid. But for the most part think that interracial relationships are more common now and most people won't even bat an eye at them or their kids. I know not every place is like this and is one of the things I appreciate about the 495 area and choose to stay here. |

OP, this isn't what you were asking here particularly but I have a small single family home I rent out and I'll be looking for a new tenant this summer. (Currently there is a family of 4 in the house and they are moving out at the end of June.)
It's a small house, but has 3BR, 2 bath, and a lovely yard and a safe easy walk distance to Oakland Terrace Elementary. The rent would be in your price range and it's a nice, friendly, safe neighborhood with lots of young kids. If you think you'd be interested I could give you an email address and we can talk more. |
| Thank you to everyone that has been helpful and provided information on what I was looking for. I'm on information overload now. I received more information then I thought I would receive. Thank you so much. |
| I hate to throw another equation in the mix but have you thought of North Laurel? I really like HoCo schools. I'd also look into a realtor who can assist with finding rentals. You may find townhomes and SFH in your budget. |
Seriously, OP, check out the county housing programs. You may be able to get a brand new place in downtown Bethesda plus you get extra consideration for being a teacher or MC employee. |

OP here. I thought I settled on moving to West Laurel but Montgomery County is back on the table after I learned that Bar-T and other before & after care locations give discounts to teachers. I'm looking into Rockville, Olney, and any other suggestions.
Not that it matters but I am black and my child is half white since it was brought up. Any other suggestions for renting purposes are still welcomed. My budget is still the same no more than $2000 a month. |
I'm biracial and also happen to be interracially married. In general, I agree with you about this area and people not caring (at least not outwardly). But I also assume you're not biracial, because you'd be surprised what comments sometimes come my/our way, from people of various backgrounds. It's weird when it happens, because I tend to get comfortable and forget that people notice. But it does happen, and more often in certain communities than others. I've got some elderly neighbors that have said some really weird things, especially in this polarized political climate. Anyway, don't want to hijack this thread into another topic, but just wanted to give some validity to the OP's question. |
This sounds like absolute perfection, OP. Hey, PP... can you post some pics, we all want to see your place (it sounds adorable). Just use the IMG link above... don't leave us hanging, PP!

Oh come on... you can't bait us like that & then not tell! As my 5 year old says to just about everything "That's no fair!" We need examples! lol |
| Any reviews on College gardens, Beall or other schools in that area |
| You can get a good rent in Parkside or Bethesda Park-these both feed into Walter Johnson schools and are a good Value for the area. |
From Parkside kids can walk to Garrett Park ES |
| What about the Fairland area of Silver Spring, less than 5 miles from where you are teaching at Burtonsville. The Tamarack neighborhood that feeds into William Tyler Page Elementary is extremely diverse, and the school is small (just over 400) and very supportive. My child will be leaving Page soon, and we have had a very good experience there. Page feeds into Briggs Chaney Middle and then into the consortium that includes, Paint Branch, Blake, and Springbrook. |
| OP here. I'm moving to Rockville. I put a deposit down on a place yesterday. My daughter will attend College Gardens. |
