I'm a MCPS middle school teacher who grew up in Gaithersburg/Montgomery Village and hasn't really been back to Montgomery County since college. I am currently a single mom of a biracial child. I teach in the lower part of Montgomery County and my daughter attends Kindergarten in PGCPS. After this school year I am looking to move from PG to Montgomery County. I use to teach in PG for 8 years and the school system is going even further downhill. I wanted to know about the schools and/or neighborhoods in the lower part of the county. I would like to move to a diverse neighborhood where the schools are also diverse.
Any suggestions would be helpful. |

What's your budget?
If you're happy with the area you are currently in other than school, MCPS employees who live outside of the district can enroll their children in a MCPS school at half of the tuition rate. I think the full tuition rate is about $12k. It's described in this link on page 6 under bullet 5: http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/policy/pdf/jedra.pdf |
Why not come back to there? Very diverse and you know the area, I'm sure. |
| I like Rockville area - diverse ethnically and SES. |
|
We need a budget! I would buy as close as you can reasonably afford to where you teach now, to minimize your commute.
Where do you teach? Are we talking Bethesda, Kensington, Silver Spring? Silver Spring springs to mind as a good option for finding a place to live. |
I live in Rockville (RM cluster) and our ES has several biracial children. |
| Oakland Terrace/Flora Singer area would work |

OP here. I will be looking to rent. My current condo is going to be sold through a short sale due to the amount I paid for it is no longer what it is valued for and the neighborhood it is in has also declined greatly.
I heard the part of the area where I grew up is not that great anymore. I went to Watkins Mills cluster schools. I teach in Burtonsville so way down county. |
| We are happy inbounds for Rosemary Hills. Definitely diverse and excellent schools. Good luck OP! |
Wow. Several biracial children. Such a rainbow of the human experience. |
| Silver Spring and Takoma Park schools are great. |
pp here, me, too, and my kids are also biracial. That's why I said I like Rockville
|
| Thanks. I'm seeing a lot of nice places to live in Rockville. I'll definitely look into the schools too. |
What about Burtonsville? |
Good god, the snark. Are you aware that for the vast majority of human history people of different tribes were prone to consuming each other? It may not meet your smug utopian ideal, but a school with multiple biracial children is indeed progress, albeit of an incremental sort. In short, get some perspective (and don't be such an ass). |
