SERIOUSLY. Half the lessons learned in college are learned outside of the classroom. How to deal with roommates/consult with a housing authority when needed is a life lesson.

The parent here. I agree that great lessons are from outside the classroom. I also think it's fine to be the sounding board for the kids while they are working out stuff. I still use my parent for that sometimes. Advice is a different thing, sometimes appropriate (money, health) and sometimes not. Anyway, back to the situation, even in my most selfish and poor judgement days while in college, I wouldn't have thought to intrude on my roommate like this, or even want to. I agree with posters who say it's nervy and shows a lack of respect. There are other opinions, though, and it's interesting to hear them and experiences on both sides. One final thing, yes, 18 year olds are adults. In the legal sense. But transitioning in every other.
