| I went to FCPS in its heyday before NCLB. My child goes to private school and is getting an education that is so much greater than mine. |
Me too. Also an Ivy grad...Common core is amazing. My second grader is doing much more in math, reading comprehension and writing. My children are in a Title I (low income( spanish dual language program in DCPS, so also becoming fluent in spanish. (Reading snd writting in spanish are a few levels below wgere she is in english-- both ahead of grade level). We also expose them to a lot of culture, history, current affairs through trips to museums, libraries, conversations about civics and civil rights and current events. We do sports activites, but havent gotten into one activity very seriously. They have mudic and will learn to read music as partbof their curriculum, as well as basic piano, but i want to put them in lessons. Havent gotten around to it. both of us work ft. |

I get what you are thinking.
My son's pressure cooker public is better on many dimensions than my mediocre public school, but it is an unforgiving place. That in turn makes the kids less creative, less interesting, and less likely to take risks. I was in school in the late seventies/early 80s - a time when funding was really low, schools were cutting back, and morale was low among the teachers. My son won't get into an ivy like I did. If I could I'd send him to an ivy in the 80s, which is impossible. The challenges to getting in have made the kids who do more uniform. |
I wish there were more of us. I'm another ivy grad who loves Common Core too. Too many people who aren't into education have given these standards a bad name. |

There is nothing wrong with the standards. The curriculum hastily written based on the standards is what I have an issue with so my DS now goes to private school. I have no desire for him to be a guinea pig.

| Dear god, how are there so many ivy grads on this forum? |
It's DC with all the political types and over achievers. Not surprising at all. |
I also went to FCPS at that time, but feel the education my children receive from MCPS is vastly superior. |
Explain. I always thought FCPS and MCPS are similar. |
