And I googled it. Got a bunch of Apple Store junk (of course) then realized it was appetizers abbreviated.

I am really unhappy with this. OP please please be Australian so I can move on.

Either use context clues or GTFO.

I usually have some sort of cheese on hand (today it's Brie), and I made a plate of cheese, dried apricots, Trader Joes Fig and Olive crisps and some seasoned nuts. I keep a supply of nuts, crackers, dried fruit, those parmesan crisps, etc on hand and I almost always have a cheese around. Just wondering what other ideas may be out there. I do keep some frozen appy's in the freezer but those don't really lend themselves to "Impromptu" - when you have to preheat an oven, that adds time/complexity.

Crudite (usually cucumbers, baby carrots, bell peppers, and/or cherry tomatoes) with hummus or yogurt dip, string cheese wrapped with Genoa salami and sliced, dates filled with chevre or cream cheese and wrapped in prosciutto, Caprese bites (toothpick with cherry tomato, piece of basil and mozzarella ball), and Gerkins wrapped with ham and cream cheese (spread the cream cheese on the ham, place the Gerkin inside, and roll). I do not keep all of these items on hand. But, I usually have the ingredients for 2-3 of these. I almost always have at least a little crudite, some string cheese, salami, ham, cream cheese, and dates available.

For those of you keeping cheese & veggie and hummus on hand do you just eat it before it goes bad then replenish? These things go bad.

Yes. We always have a bunch of cheese. We will eat it if there are no guests same for veggies. Hummus I can just make quickly from canned chickpeas.

Two things I always have on hand: cream cheese and a jar of my MIL's homemade jelly. I love to do her peach and pepper jelly or green pepper jelly poured over cream cheese and served with crackers.

As for the rest... I will variously have pimento cheese, smoked Gouda, or a sharp white cheddar on hand. Any or all of those might be set out. Cornichons and olives, sliced apples and honey (also goes well with the cheese), fresh berries, chips and salsa, hummus and carrots IF the hummus is untouched and unopened. I really can't deal with seeing someone else's hummus with food swipes already in it get set out, so if I set that out, it's a brand new container.

Right now in fall apple butter or pumpkin butter are AMAZING with a nice sharp white cheddar.

Am I the only one who takes the large container of hummus and spoons some out into a bowl for company? Whatever is in the bowl gets eaten or tossed and the container in the fridge remains fresh for later.

I don't keep anything specifically for guests but typically have something on hand to make a little nosh. An unopened bag of tortilla chips and a new jar of salsa. Or come crackers and olives, and ideally some cheese.
I also try and keep ice cream and chocolate syrup on hand, and always have sprinkles for unexpected kids. I virtually always have something baked available, so I tend to offer something sweet more than something like an appetizer.

You're not the only one. I put hummus or any other dip into a serving bowl for company. I was not raised by wolves.

Preheating an oven kills it for you?

Cheese, crackers, grapes, marinated artichokes, jar of roasted peppers, frozen edamame, pretzels. I usually also have a bag of Hershey kisses for something sweet.

Who says this, just out of curiosity? Are you Australian, watching footie, eating breakie with the bikkies and the chokkie, etc?

We keep unopened, fresh bags of assorted rice crackers, as well as cheeses, good olives, fresh nuts, fruit, hummus, chips, salsa, (and ingredients for throwing together dips), and assorted beverages. In the winter, the teens or I have usually baked something.

I actually AM Australian and I regularly say things like "bikkie", "brekkie", "chockies" and "footie" especially to my kids as I want them to learn my lingo but "appy" just sounds wrong, wrong, wrong to my Aussie ear. If you're going to use Aussie slang you have to get it right. I reckon that the poster is an American wannabe Aussie who just made up the word "appy".

Oh come on. Don't be that person.

Nope, you stop. No one likes the type who makes "appys" for her "hubby"...

Absolutely right. Cringe inducing.

The list of folks who are wannabe Aussies must be extremely limited.
