On-hand appy/snacks for impromptu guests

I need to know what an appy is.

Oh come on. Don't be that person.

Nope, you stop. No one likes the type who makes "appys" for her "hubby"...

A couple kinds of cheese. Crackers and ginger snaps. Baby carrots and green peppers and cucumbers. I can open a can of chickpeas and make hummus, there my be tahini in the fridge.

I used to have a whole room devoted to storing food (for myself to eat as I'm not too fond of unexpected visitors), but one day an old friend brought over 12 strangers and the next thing I knew, all of my on-hand appys were devoured.

Salami, cheese, crackers, cornichons, olives, grapes or whatever fruit is around.

Anonymous wrote:What do you keep on hand for unexpected guests to snack on? My cousin just called and we arranged for her to pop over for a drink/snacks with her boyfriend. I usually have some sort of cheese on hand (today it's Brie), and I made a plate of cheese, dried apricots, Trader Joes Fig and Olive crisps and some seasoned nuts. I keep a supply of nuts, crackers, dried fruit, those parmesan crisps, etc on hand and I almost always have a cheese around. Just wondering what other ideas may be out there. I do keep some frozen appy's in the freezer but those don't really lend themselves to "Impromptu" - when you have to preheat an oven, that adds time/complexity.

Crudite (usually cucumbers, baby carrots, bell peppers, and/or cherry tomatoes) with hummus or yogurt dip, string cheese wrapped with Genoa salami and sliced, dates filled with chevre or cream cheese and wrapped in prosciutto, Caprese bites (toothpick with cherry tomato, piece of basil and mozzarella ball), and Gerkins wrapped with ham and cream cheese (spread the cream cheese on the ham, place the Gerkin inside, and roll). I do not keep all of these items on hand. But, I usually have the ingredients for 2-3 of these. I almost always have at least a little crudite, some string cheese, salami, ham, cream cheese, and dates available.

Nothing. We would eat all of this snacky stuff ourselves (so I dont buy it) and I don't like unexpected visitors.

This one is golden. I love ideas for stuff I can keep in my freezer. Add to that an unopened bag of pita chips (which my kids won't touch).
The only sad part will be having to cycle through it if I don't have visitors, because we can't let it get old...right?

I love your kind of hospitality! Welcoming but not fussy.

Also, I admire all of you who have fun or fancy snacks on hand just in case a guest stops by, but really a: I'll just eat it myself if I have it; and b: Just meal planning/cooking/shopping for the people I know will show up at the table every night (DH and kids) drives me insane enough...I can't handle the thought that I have to be ready for unexpected guests as well.
