What would your relationship with your MIL be like if she treated you as an equal and an adult?

For the most part, I get along with MIL fine. She's very nice and caring.

But I wish she knew that if she would just ease up, and stop trying so hard, we could be closer. If she showed me, through her words and actions, that she respected my autonomy and my individuality, I'd be more interested in getting closer with her. I have no desire to be "assimilated" and "indoctrinated." I'm more than a cog in HER family's wheel.
