It's also not really a great song. More than even most pop/dance songs, it's the same lyrics over and over with little variation. Okay so you're at the club and only have eyes for him. Got it. How about another verse.
I guess it's sort of sweetly autobiographical as a love song by Taylor to Calvin, made less loving by bringing in another girl to sing it. Maybe Taylor wanted to sing the main vocals on it to get more indie cred and the break up really happened when Harris didn't want to go that way and brought Rihanna in, then Swift got jealous as the song climbed the charts. I still think Swift's comments at the recent awards ceremony about others taking credit for your work were probably also about this -- maybe even primarily about this and not Kanye -- but no one caught on. |
| Lol, it's a dreadful song. But Rihanna managed to make a silk purse out of that sow's ear...haha. |
I agree. I usually think Taylor Swift is very talented and a smart business woman. I, however, do NOT like the needy, attention seeking, backstabbing personality that is coming through the cracks in her public persona. Take this story for example. Taylor and Calvin collaborated on this song. For whatever reason SHE chose to be credited for the song using a pseudonym. The song is performed by Rihanna and produced by Calvin. It is a hit. Now, AFTER the fact that she agreed to be credited for the song using a pesudeym of her picking, she is throwing a fit, going behind his back and announcing she wrote it. To do...what exactly? Calvin never did not give her credit. He seemed perfectly happy to give her credit where due...he is annoyed that she had to drop it as an accouncement implying HE undermined her. Which, he did not. Also, the interview she references where she was supposedly hurt...he may have exagerrated his desire to not work with her to cover for her? It didn't strike me as that bad. If they were dating and in love, he couldnt have had terrible intentions and nothing a simple discussion afterwards couldn't have solved. If she WANTED credit for the lyrics, she should have spoken up before the song was released and not try to use that revelation to throw shade at Harris. I'm glad KIMYE, Katy and Harris are calling her out on her b.s. This summer has been a publicity nightmare for Swift. Hence her trying to deflect the stories by publishing photo ops with her new beau. |
| Watch Calvin release Taylor's version with the missing lyrics. Ugh. They need to just write another song already. |
If she doesn't cut it back a notch soon she is going to get the "Crazy" label that other performers (think Britney) have had to overcome. Taylor is too talented for that. She needs to take some time off - away from the press and high drama. I hope someone close to her can talk some sense into her because she is OVER THE TOP. |
Taylor Swift is just a pop star- her songs get old in a minute (Some pop stars end up being artistic and listened to beyond their 'time ex. the Beatles) BUT and this is a big one- Taylor Swift taps into the zeitgeist - she is like an unwitting Trumpist. She stands for WASP female identity in the music world as compared to say Beyonce (i would rather die than listen to Bey but she will probably be remembered as cultural icon 60 years from now- her music is ART,) or Rihanna or hiphop. Now that even boybands are becoming integrated and ppl like the Kardashians are out there (i/m sorry but the Kardashians are not 'quite' white, no-one in Augusta GA thinks they are white). Taylor Swift is the poster child for WASPS at a time when they feel increasingly embattled in their own society and culture. I'm sorry but musically she's nothing. It doesn't matter if she writes her lyrics and melodies- its too bubblegum to last except that she appeals to latent feelings in mainstream Americans that they don't even really know are there. Not just WASPS, other whites as well. I mean i still blast whitney houston but I doubt that anyone will remember any of her songs except Bad Blood, i can't even name one off the top of my head right now and I listen to 99.5 more than i'd like to admit. |
Well, I disagree with you. I think that Taylor's songs are well written and tell a story that people will find interesting down the road. Just because she is WASPy doesn't mean that she's irrelevant. Her story is just as valid as anyone else's. I personally love her songs and I know most of them. And I'm a middle aged mother of boys who do not listen to Taylor (well for the most part). I also think that because Taylor leads a relatively clean life, is hard working and naturally creative and talented (and intrinsically driven) that she will be performing and adapting her music as she gets older. We're already seeing her do that. I look forward to seeing great things from Taylor. But she needs to stop this petty nonsense. So unnecessary and it really detracts from her image |
+1 Excellent analysis of her fan base. |

An artist like Whitney Houston will be remembered for her gorgeous voice. But a lot of her songs have fairly basic lyrics. Ex: I will Always Love You
Whitney's voice is what made that song so beautiful. She performed it well. But the song itself (the lyrics), meh. Most of Taylor's songs by comparison tell a story. There is more to the actual words. |
No one is going to call Taylor another crazy Britney unless she shaves her head and goes after the paparazzi with an umbrella. LOL |
Really? What about Love Story, You Belong With Me, 22, Blank Space? She has a list of hits a mile long. If you want to talk about someone whose career will be over soon, look at someone like Katy Perry. |
| Personally, my favorite is "Mean." Which is why all this drama is kind of disappointing. |
She doesn't earn that Prince quote, but this one: Game: blouses. |
Katy Perry is sort of a larger than life performer. She almost seems like a theme park character on stage. But she gives a good show, she still looks (naturally) amazing, her songs are actually decent lyric wise...her voice is not good live but her recordings are good. And honestly her fans really do not seem to care. I think that she still has some years left. But since her popularity is largely based on her appearance and near perfect female proportions...well, we know that doesn't last forever. But she seems to actually "get" that. |

Well, I do appreciate that Swift writes her own songs and has huge concerts that entertain people without putting propellers on her breasts. Or singing about anacondas, or simulating sex or fellatio or caressing another singer's junk with a giant foam finger. I mean, it sounds crazy to actually write these things down like they are accomplishments, but that's where we are.
I mean, sometimes I show my daughter Katy Perry videos, but I always feel like it's a bit wrong to do so. Okay so she gets herself out of the jungle instead of relying on the man, but does she still need to have enormous boobs and a tiny waist and almost no clothes in order to do that? Taylor is also impossibly slim, but in general she keeps things covered and her dancing is lovably awkward, not sexy (whether that's intentional or not I'm not sure -- it seems intentional in Shake It Off). |
