Although I'm not sure why Herndon HS is being avoided. It pulls kids from good north Reston neighborhoods.

20171 also feeds into Oakton.

which neighborhood?

Franklin Farm north of Fairfax County Parkway feeds into Oakton, as do all the neighborhoods off Bennett Road and Thompson Road.

interesting. OK, We looked at Franklin Farm that zoned to Chantilly - so that community is split.

Correct. Franklin Farm south of Fairfax County Parkway is zoned for Chantilly, while FF north of the Parkway is zoned for Oakton.

I'm sure the actual map directions are north and south, but since the FFX County Pkwy goes north/south, it seems to make more sense to say west of the parkway and east of the parkway.

You're right. Sorry about that! My sleep deprivation (two hours last night) is clearly catching up with me at this point.

no worries - I just was hoping to clear up any confusion for anyone trying to decipher where all these houses are. With the way the pkwy twists and turns, your original post is likely right.

If school is more important than a nice home, you can rent an apartment around the Tysons area and get access to the McLean/Langley schools!

Are you sure you want to move to this area? Your numbers don't point to you being able to afford it.

Plenty of posters upthread have had suggestions of areas that OP could afford. Of couse they can afford to move here.

That looks nice. I'm surprised it has 6 bedrooms.

greenbriar seemed old and decrepit 30 years ago.

I live in this area. All MSs (Carson, Franklin, Rocky Run) are top notch-- and in a couple years all 3 will probably be AAP Centers, with Franklin taking 1/2 of Cason's kids. So are most ESs, but you get into the AAP, LLIV, base school debate, which is a matter of parent preference (post on the AAP board). We.'re attending Oak Hill and love it, but are in the Center, but the base parents seem pretty happy too. In HS, I would personally send my kids to Chantilly or Oakton (but have heard the Oakton commute is awful with new HS start times). I would send (and will probably pupil place) the right type of kid (strong across the board academically with a humanities bent and a good writer, like DC1) to South Lakes IB- it really seems to be a school on the rise. DC2 is all about stem and will probably go Chantilly, which is out base school and has a new governor's STEM academy. I would not personally feel great, based on what other parents are saying, about Westfields or Herndon, and we a avoided these HSs when we moved. But we keep hearing there is a new Western FFX high school is in the works, so the HS zoning might be completely different in 8 years.

GL! The FCPS zoning is a cluster**** even before you add in possibilities of AAP, immersion and pupil placement. But, having moved a year ago and done tons of research, folks saying Burke/ W Speingfield and Herndon /Chantilly are stearing you right if you want to most bang for your housing buck, which still getting top notch school at you price point.

Another though: when the Silver line opened at Whiele, there was a big bump in near by housing values. We are hoping for a similar bump in about 2018, when the Dullus toll road station open. I'd make tysons very metro accessible, and if you buy now, you might get a good bump in oroperty value in a couple years.

fCPS is confusing. Get a good RE agent, ask lots of question, and try to visit the schools (they allowed us do this with DD when we moved).

I personally, would do western FFX because of the straight line down the toll road and the metro coming. But Burke/ w Springfirld also has a great reputation.

Because all those homes in McLean and north Arlington are brand spanking new? My friend just bought a home about the same as ours in Vienna for twice the price that still needed tons of renovation. Shut your trap.

Our neighborhood may not be beautiful, but it is turning over and tons of young families are moving in. Our home has been mostly renovated and modernized by us. Frankly, in our bracket, there aren't a ton of newer options in this area. And we're eyeing the west Springfield area right now and frankly would have to pay more for less than we have here - homes around the same age and nowhere near as nicely renovated as our current home. Plus, most of them have crappy layouts and lousy outdoor space.

What about the WT Woodson pyramid? I'll bet you can find decent 4br homes from 500-600k in the Old Creek and Little Run neighborhoods.
