How much do men really spend on engagement rings?

Untrue. There are quality diamonds in those cuts but you are paying more. I bought my wife an Asscher cut diamond from Blue Nile. 2 carat, VVS2 clarity, D color, and excellent symmetry. I paid a little under 50k for the ring.

Op, go to Blue Nile. They have great quality diamonds in your price range. Congrats

There are zero cushion cut diamonds that are well-cut and have good characteristics. I just looked. There are a few asscher cut diamonds, but they are pretty garish looking.

You do not know diamonds, my dear. Blue Nile is of the best. I just checked and they have spectacular rings that are sig. ideal, D-F, etc.

Blue Nile does not show you the actual diamond itself once ordered, only the specs. I called and had them send over images of the actual diamond purchase. My wife's ring is flawless and she loves it. All of her friends are envious of it.

OP, spend as much as you want. It's your $.

Of course they do. Just not in cushion cut.

I was married last year and didn't have an engagement ring. We just went with wedding bands. We could have absolutely afforded a big diamond, but the band is what I value and is what i wear daily. My point is this, pick a ring or rings based on what you both love and value. Congratulations!

My husband and I have a 2 carat gorgeous Asscher CZ (CZ's are not measured in carats but this is the equivalent) in a spectacular 18k rose gold setting. Total cost 4k. Not a soul can tell.

Rest of the money paid off my student loan. Best decision I ever made.

Shah and Shah in DC. Great experience. Beautiful pieces.

My diamond was about $13k, eternity band (wedding ring) probably equal). We married at 30, both owned homes, both had good jobs and had paid off student loans etc.

I bought him a beautiful omega watch as a wedding gift.

We wear all of the pieces all the time- don't regret any of it as it didn't incur debt and 10 years into this gig we know we are in it for life.

You do you.

ITA! I never even wear mine. It just isn't practical for every day (and it isn't a huge stone). Seriously, waste of money. Just get something nice. The amounts you are talking about are frankly, gross to spend on a piece of jewelry.

That's rude.

I personally feel like ostentatious jewelry is incredibly gauche and new-money. The best people pass down rings.

Really? What kind of circles do you run in? Most women I know don't even wear their engagement rings every day. I find it hard to believe that your wife's friends sit around and talk about how jealous they are of her perfect ring. Maybe she tells you that because you are insecure or something.

I would much rather have paid off student loans and a CZ then crushing debt and money thrown away on a diamond that basically depreciates to nothing as soon as you buy it.

I'm with you.

OP, I don't believe in those stupid rules. Get a beautiful, unique ring under perhaps $10k, and invest the rest in something more meaningful.

I'm with you guys.

OP, put 50K down on a house in a nice school district. Propose to her on the front lawn, and put the front door key in a nice jeweler's box, with a very inexpensive ring, if you must.

WTF? I've worn my engagement ring every day since DH proposed! What circles are you running with where ladies don't wear both the rings? That's uncommon

What a waste of money. I told my DH to not waste money on a ring, is a bad investment.

same here, but I'm a bit older. at this point i'd prefer to wear just the band but I feel guilty bc the ring was so $$$.

No. Most women I know just wear the wedding ring.
