How much do men really spend on engagement rings?

I have a friend whose fiancé pretty much demanded a 2 1/2 carat diamond engagement ring. At the time he did not make 2 1/2 carat money but was extraordinarily whipped by this girl.
He bought a zircon which he told no one about; I only know about it because when they divorced she told my wife she went to sell it and was given like $180 for the weight of platinum from the band. Whether it’s real or fake, the ring or its stone are worthless.
