Family Beach house drama

It's not about the bathroom

I mean Op may think it is and it is a little. But the tenor of the vacation completely changes when you add another family.

PP here. LOVE this idea. Please do this, OP!

I don't get it???

Oh, you must not be from around these parts. A Don John is a portable toilet that people rent when they don't have access to regular toilets. It is not a Spanish lover. Do NOT confuse the two!

NP here, and I didn't know what a Don Jon was either. I googled it and found this in the Urban Dictionary:

"A defensive structure containing the home of a warlord and his family, central command for his military and base of operations for his regime.
The peasants looked with fear on the donjon up on its mount. Last year, an uprising had been put down. The lord's men had come down and burned some huts, and the leaders of the rebellion were publicly flayed and dismembered. "

I thought it was funny you guys were recommending op rent a fortress for her family!

Just change your plans. Tell your parents you are sorry that it won't work out but you had planned according to the schedule and your sisters set up and you weren't aware it had changed. Tell them that you were looking forward to your family's time with them and ask if there is a better week for a visit after the traditional summer months when they can accommodate your size family more easily and you will do your best to get the time off work. I think it's good to gently remind them that you cannot be as flexible as the others. Ultimately they should have been told of the arrangements you made so they would have some leverage to "enforce" it. Otherwise you are just pitted against your sister and you'll just have to decide if it's worth confronting her.

Just go and spend the time together. Unfortunately, your parents may be dead in a few years and the family dynamics will really shift.

Vacations are too precious and life's too short to vie for bathroom time.
Your sisters are out of line and I'd be beyond angry that they are following established rules. I'd cancel and take a vacation with just your family.

At least they are getting a Summer Vacation. I heard on the radio this morning that 62% of families in the USA are not taking a Summer Vacation this year (2015). The main reason that was given is finances. They simply can't afford it!

My parents also have a beach house. We know if we go there, all family is potentially welcome. My parent's set the rules- they are there every weekend between Memorial Day and Labor Day. All kids/grandkids welcome at all times. Essentially, I cannot think of the house as a potential trip for my own nuclear family unless it is a weekend/week during the off season. During the summer, we can definitely go... but we know everyone else will be there.

I am sorry that you tried to work out the time with your sisters and they did not stick to the schedule. That sucks. I completely understand how its annoying that they can take advantage of the house more than you and I completely understand that you might feel like you deserve the one week you can actually take since they are there all the time.

But it seems like maybe it would be easier for your family if you go to the beach house for a family visit and go on a separate vacation for yourselves.
