I grew up as a Jehovah's Witness. AMA

I just bought a house and live by a JW church. We get so many JW who come to our door. If I flat out tell them not to come to our door or leave their pamphlets will they listen?

When I was a kid and had to go door to door, we were told to continue going back to a home unless there was clear reason not to. They believe they are responsible for your life and have to give you every opportunity to get the true Word of God.
You can say you are an apostate, that works. I prefer to be nice- it's sad that people get sucked into these cults. I just avoid contact. You can try telling them to not come back, they might mark your house down as what my mom used to call a "goose egg".

As a kid, I had a man wave a gun at me, was charged by dogs, and was sent door to door alone many times at 11 and 12. Granted, it was awhile ago, but I was in dangerous situations several times.

OP, what is your life like now, career / hobby wise? I don't want you to be more personal than you'd like, but I am so curious. You left at 18 and built a new life. Did you go to college? What industry are you working in?

Do you identify with any religion?

I was a hot mess for awhile, but I managed to get a decent career going as a chef/baker/management for 22 years. Now I just work for private people as a household manager and nanny. I did make it to school for a bit but got caught up in working too much and let it go. When I go back- when, it will be for an art degree.
I was married for 18 years and have a lovely 17 year old daughter. My life now is hard, because we struggle for money, but peaceful and supported by loving friends. I'm happy and finally found my art again at age 45. I've sold some pieces and find solace in nature and art and by being around creative people. I raised my child to have an open mind regarding religion, encouraging her to explore her own spiritual nature and choose her own path. In some ways, I feel that forcing me to be a part of a restrictive religion as a small child was a form of abuse, but that's another topic and too controversial for this thread. I just took a different path with my own child.
I don't belong to any one faith, but I find absolute comfort in Tao, some Buddhist belief and nature religions. My spirituality has been linked to nature since I can remember, as a child.

Thanks for asking. I'm not used to talking about myself, I feel I'm very ordinary. I'm almost 50 and have no money, but I've some peace and calm in my life. I didn't have that growing up, so I feel that might be more important.

They believe only 144,000 are in/going to heaven. The rest will live on a peaceful earth, after Armageddon.

Who gets to be part of the 144,000? Where does that number come from? Is there hell? Who goes there?

The 144,000 thing always confused me as a child. It's a number pulled from Revelations, which is taken quite literally. Apparently if you are part of the 144,000, you'll know somehow, like a calling. There was one gentleman that I recall as a child who was said to be one of the number. It's a practically saintly way they get treated.

Jehovah's Witnesses don't believe in hell...... but they do believe that unrepentant sinners that won't convert in the Last Days, as they call it, will burn for 1000 years in the lake of fire, also in Revelations.

I apologize if any of my information is incorrect, I'm going off what I remember from childhood .
