My son is in it. Fantastic. And they are committed to working with local industry to help your kid get a job. Hope it remains a sleeper school!!

Game Design applicants must submit portfolios. The departments meet monthly with the Dulles corridor hi-tech companies to work with them to handle contracts (some students are paid to work on them) and to assess need. The average graduate in computer science makes more than the average UVA and William and Mary graduate (per President Cabrera). The internaitonal student body is immense, as are out-of-state students. Fourteen admissions counselors handle the international students alone. 35,000 students attend, 1/3 of which are Doct. or Masters' candidates. 12,750 live on campus and the construction there never ends. Please go visit and read up on what's in your own backyard. It's an astonishing institution that the state legislature has pumped millions into. Facilities are new and state-of-the art. The engineering schools are also well regarded. And Mason just opened its North Korean campus last year.

I hope you mean south korea

Yup. My bad. I just get irritated every time the ignorant come on and say it's a commuter school. So I have the facts memorized and just spit them out fast. It's a great opportunity for Virginia kids and surprisingly difficult to get into from the NoVA high schools.

Difficult compared to which schools? Isn't the acceptance rate like 65 per cent?

The only exception might be if you don't have money for room and board and need to live at home. GMU is a fine school but choosing GMU over UVA for computer science doesn't make sense if the goal is to the most highly ranked school. There is no subject at GMU that ranks higher than UVA. Period.

This is the strangest thread ever.....

I know a kid who chose VT over MIT two years ago... that was the strangest.

Makes a lot more sense than GMU over a name school. VT actually ranks top 20 nationally for engineering.

Just stop. U. Va. is on probation in the hearts and minds of humankind with all the crap that's happened there over the past year. A double dose of hubris won't help matters at all. Period.

PP here. If students are turning down UVA based on the recent incidents I doubt the next school on the list is GMU. There are A LOT of other instate schools that rank ahead of GMU. I have nothing against GMU and chances are my DS will probably go there but people aren't turning down UVA to go to GMU.

Did it ever cross your mind that some choose quality education and job prospects over the "prestige" of a name?
Is rather my child be sitting in an office with a six figure salary immediately after graduation than job-hunting with his nose in the air.

Six figure salary? Yeah, man.

GMU. From experience, it's a very good school.

There are several posters here who have been praising GMU, and rightfully so. Try to keep up.

Not to mention disingenuous, and likely one poster in multiple personas answering his or her own questions...

Is GMU even ranked in the top 100 for CS? Of course not.

GMU has its purpose, and is a fine school--but let's not get carried away. It's logical competition is VCU not UVA...

Which one will you choose?

Hi OP Here. Thanks for all the posts about UVA and GMU, it will help DC in decision making.

Agreed. There is simply no comparison. Program quality notwithstanding, GMU will not open a single door compared to UVA, and the rest of the education at GMU will not be perceived as impressive, at all, period. This is not a legit choice.

My dh went to UVA. We have since lived in California, Texas, Indiana, and Georgia. No one outside of the immediate area gives UVA any more weight than U-anything else.

Where are the undergraduate rankings? Or is your kid going to turn that 6 figure salary to stick around for a few more years for CS?
