| What is the point of this thread? Is this just advertising for GMU? seems odd. and a little creepy. |
International students largely pay full freight and are therefore welcomed by most colleges in this country. Plus, schools look forward to donations from the kids' rich parents. The out of state students -- their state school systems must be pretty weak. Part of the problem with GMU -- which, to be fair, has some excellent professors -- is its location. Clearly, better foresight would have resulted in it being given a better campus. |

I've lived in NOVA most of my life and went to UVA. I've honestly never heard or known of anyone who chose GMU over UVA. They aren't even in the same league. The only exception might be if you don't have money for room and board and need to live at home. GMU is a fine school but choosing GMU over UVA for computer science doesn't make sense if the goal is to the most highly ranked school. There is no subject at GMU that ranks higher than UVA. Period.
This is the strangest thread ever..... |
Just stop. U. Va. is on probation in the hearts and minds of humankind with all the crap that's happened there over the past year. A double dose of hubris won't help matters at all. Period. |
PP here. If students are turning down UVA based on the recent incidents I doubt the next school on the list is GMU. There are A LOT of other instate schools that rank ahead of GMU. I have nothing against GMU and chances are my DS will probably go there but people aren't turning down UVA to go to GMU. |
Did it ever cross your mind that some choose quality education and job prospects over the "prestige" of a name? Is rather my child be sitting in an office with a six figure salary immediately after graduation than job-hunting with his nose in the air. |
Wrong. There are some very strong students whose families want them to go in-state for the tuition, but stay in the area. |
Why even bother getting a BS then if the only goal is to get a high-paying job ASAP? Go to a trade school for some network security certificate. Probably only 2 years and your kid will make plenty of dough. |
I know a kid who chose VT over MIT two years ago... that was the strangest. |
Probably VT was with full ride. |
Yup. My bad. I just get irritated every time the ignorant come on and say it's a commuter school. So I have the facts memorized and just spit them out fast. It's a great opportunity for Virginia kids and surprisingly difficult to get into from the NoVA high schools. |
| The answer: GMU for internships or jobs. Rising DD junior already has a game design internship for the summer (paid) via GMU. Freshman DS also has an internship on a NASA grant for a computer cience project. Think: Charlottesville vs. the Dulles Tech. Corridor. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/893048-uva-vs-gmu-computer-science.html |
+100 Great, great program. |
Not to mention disingenuous, and likely one poster in multiple personas answering his or her own questions... Is GMU even ranked in the top 100 for CS? Of course not. GMU has its purpose, and is a fine school--but let's not get carried away. It's logical competition is VCU not UVA... |
Florida Atlantic has more international students. It's still regional at best.... |
