It's not, though. It's been a nickname for Sarah for hundreds of years.

I am a Sarah called Sally. I am 53, so I guess that makes me old. I have always loved my name, except explaining it to people who disagree that it is a valid nickname. Luckily that doesn't happen very often. A group of my friends also call me "Sary" as a combo of the two names. I am named after my grandmother Sarah, who went by Sadie, and a great Aunt named Sarah, who went by Sade. My parents thought that "Sarah" sounded too old-fashioned, so they called me by the traditional nickname Sally. You can't predict what names will be sound like (trendy, classic, or old-fashioned) in the future, so if you like Sally, do it! People usually smile when I tell them my name, which either means they like me or my name or both. I don't run into too many other Sally's, but I think it's about 50/50 Sallys /Sarahs called Sally. I've always felt as if it was a classic but unique name.

Anonymous wrote:Nancy is a nickname for Anne? Huh. Been an Anne for 43 years and never heard that one.

Like Sally.

Yes, just like Ned is a nickname for Edward. Supposedly from "mine Ann/mine Ed" to "my Nan/my Ned".

That doesn't explain Hal as a nickname for Henry, though. Or Sally as a nickname for Sarah. Nonetheless, they are nicknames.

Hank is a nickname for Henry. Hal is for Harold.

Shakespeare disagrees with you.

There is not just one nickname for every name, you know. And not all nicknames are only nicknames for one name, either. Hal could be a nickname for Henry or for Harold.

I love it, OP! In fact this was on our list for a girl (but we had a boy). I love both Sarah and Sally and as my name has no intuitive or traditional nickname, I always kind of wanted one so I thought it was cool that the name Sarah has nice nickname options but is also a great name on its own.

Sarah here, and never in my life have I heard this or been called Sally!!

Look into old literature. Sally was the traditional nickname for Sarah. Like Nancy was the traditional nickname for Anne.

And just because something is not know by you does not make in nonexistent!

+1,000,000. People really need to read more and stop using "I never heard of ______" as an excuse or reason.

Sally is the traditional nickname for Sarah. I love both names but especially love this nickname!

do you know how many personalized gifts that people receive about their name in their lifetime? I know my name is Hebrew for princess, a million times over, I know every pop song or whatever random things people want to tell me about related to my name. Just because I don't know it, doesn't mean I think it is not true...just clearly not something I encountered in 35 years of living with the name- meaning not at all widely excepted.

NP here. The first time I heard that Sally was a nickname for Sarah, I was in my 30s. Sally used to be a very common nickname for Sarah in our parents' generation. So common, that those that wanted people to actually call their daughters Sarah and not Sally had to make an effort, like saying "call my son Jonathan, not Jon".

The first time I heard it was like "whaaaaat?"

I thought PP's point was that, over the course of the years, she thought she knew every tidbit/piece of trivia about her name (Sarah), but just learned something new.

Yes, Sally is very old nickname for Sarah and like Nancy for Ann, has become its own stand alone name.

Did you know Molly = Margaret? Jack = John? Kitty = Katherine? Betty = Elizabeth?

Molly = Mary

Peggy or Maisie = Margaret
