Look into old literature.  Sally was the traditional nickname for Sarah.  Like Nancy was the traditional nickname for Anne.

do you know how many personalized gifts that people receive about their name in their lifetime? I know my name is Hebrew for princess, a million times over, I know every pop song or whatever random things people want to tell me about related to my name. Just because I don't know it, doesn't mean I think it is not true...just clearly not something I encountered in 35 years of living with the name- meaning not at all widely excepted. [/quote]

NP here.  The first time I heard that Sally was a nickname for Sarah, I was in my 30s.  Sally used to be a very common nickname for Sarah in our parents' generation.  So common, that those that wanted people to actually call their daughters Sarah and not Sally had to make an effort, like saying "call my son Jonathan, not Jon".
