Name:Sarah called Sally?

My Aunt Sally is officially a Sarah. She named her daughter Sarah (called Sarah) too, which I thouht was pretty badass.

Nancy is a nickname for Anne? Huh. Been an Anne for 43 years and never heard that one.

Like Sally.

Even funnier, Nancy Ann was a common combo, akin to naming your child Betty Elizabeth.

Totally disagree. I've spent my entire 30-year professional career trying to escape my childhood nickname. DD has a name that is virtually impossible to attach a nickname to.

I have a Sarah and never knew Sally could be a nickname. Sadie is the one I knew/hear.

I love it. I have a 30- something cousin sarah who has only ever gone by Sally. It suits her.

Yes, just like Ned is a nickname for Edward. Supposedly from "mine Ann/mine Ed" to "my Nan/my Ned".

That doesn't explain Hal as a nickname for Henry, though. Or Sally as a nickname for Sarah. Nonetheless, they are nicknames.

Yes I did the same. I also struggled like hell to shed a cutesy nickname.

Sally is not a cutesy nickname. IMO.

It works for me as a full-blown professional adult.

Wow, I'm surprised you never heard this! I had a friend in hs who was this (34).

The one that has always stumped me is "Peggy" for Margaret.

My sister's name is Christina and everyone has always called her Nina - few people of our generation even know that Nina is a nickname for Christina.

Why not just name her Sally? I think it's quite a stretch to say that's the nickname for Sarah.
