| It sounds like the Unstuck program run at Edmund Burke is run differently than the program at Ivymount. Ivymount's screening process is limited to an application form and an observation and run more like a business than anything else. |

This doesn't make sense. They keep extending the application deadline from early December to later December to now January. I just wonder what is going on.

They have trouble filling the space for older kids. |
It also costs $2500. |
| $2500? Ouch. |
Yes, $2500. http://www.poac-nova.org/newsmanager/news_article.cgi?news_id=20025&no_popup=0 |

I'm the PP whose child did the camp. I'd be disappointed too if the letter advised me to enroll my child in the $60K/year school instead of the weekend program! So sorry that's been your experience. Just adding the perspective that they do look for a fairly standard Asperger's profile for the camp so that may be the reason. I remember there were a few camp families who were dissatisfied with the camp and their kids did seem to be outliers (I don't mean that in a bad sense, please don't take it that way) from the rest of the population. One was a particularly active child who wasn't as adept as the others at taking direction, and the other was a bit too mature/advanced in social skills to get much out of it. Keep in mind the high cost makes parents expect a lot out of it, so if they're dissatisfied they make it known!
I hope you find the right solution and fit for your child. I've been impressed by JCC social skills groups, FWIW. |

Yes, the 50K-80K school will be a perfect fit apparently! My DS has been having a lot of behavioral challenges when he started school in the fall so I am not surprised that he exhibited them during the second observation and Ivymount felt he does not fit into the program but I wish they had not accepted us and then rescinded the offer. My son is going to be so disappointed and this is something that could easily have been prevented. My kid is "classic" Asperger's according to our former developmental pediatrician and CNMC. |

We were encouraged to continue an application to MAP for our AS kid not once but twice. There were visits and detailed discussions of kid coming for intake, when the start date would be, not an acceptance, but definitely every indication that there would be one. The first time we were going for due process and they just basically dropped us. One month after a "let's have him in for an intake visit in two weeks or so," I finally had to get in touch with them. They had just dropped us completely. That's when we got a no after them knowing we were putting them as our school for due process and talking about intake meetings.
Stupidly we looked again a couple of years later and this time money was a huge issue for them. After a lengthy conversation about DS, Monica actually said she was really concerned about the money and didn't want to spend much more time on us unless the money was 100% in place because "it was a waste of her time." Still there was discussion of further involvement with my child. Monica telling me what I should tell DS about the next visit. Thank goodness I didn't bring it up with him since nothing was officially on the calendar because then it was complete radio silence for a couple of weeks and then a rejection letter. I understand their right to have a process and decide that they aren't the right fit for some kids. Of course. However, they seem to be really confused about the potential impact of discussing "intake" at a school with a kid with AS and then dumping us for unknown reasons. Will definitely never look their way again though I'm sure it is a great fit for many other people. |
| Do they only want families who can shell out 80k privately now? |
| And, um, who can do that??? |

Sounds like money is what they care about most.
Ivymount runs an Asperger's program at SWW currently with DCPS soon to be moved to Thaddeus Stevens once construction is complete. Don't bother looking for a website, there isn't one yet. Private SN funding is increasingly harder to find even in DC. Our former developmental ped told us that Monica thought our child will fit better at Ivymount MAP than the DCPS programs.... especially since our charter is eager to get rid of us and we will not have to go through due process to get funding. Charter is eager to provide FAPE according to their answer to our complaint that the school was not following the IEP. Ivymount runs their business "differently" it sounds like than other industries and schools and not for the better. |
