Washington Teachers Union will overwhelm parents if they don't turn out.

Last I checked, only 400 or 10% of union members voted for anything. Of those people, how many are DC residents and how many of those would pick an unequivocal supporter of Henderson?

Based on this thread alone, there are probably a whole lot more parents than WTU members voting.

WTU runs copier machines non-stop and turns out seniors on school buses all over the city. WTU members are the nice ladies you see running many of our polls. They might not vote in DC but they are all over the place before and on election day. LIUNA, AFSCME, and are going to the wall for Bowser in Wards 5, 7 and 8.

Really? What is the basis for this claim?

Go to Twitter and search for Bowser, AFSCME, LiUNA, UNITE, etc. Bowser is owned by the unions. Catania has the cops.

Have not seen that statement anywhere but on DCUM. Stop making crap up. WTU has not endorsed.

If Bowser wins on Tuesday, which I feel that she will, it will be because this is a DEMOCRACY. It is too bad that the elites in here, "here" being basically a self-serving echo chamber for overly-indulged, overly-entitled will be upset.
However, that is what democracy is--if Catania is so well liked/his policies so well supported, as everyone on here wishes to believe, then he will indeed win.

You do know that some people will vote for Muriel because she is a black woman and that some won't vote for Catania because he is a white, homosexual man, right? If all voters properly informed themselves and voted based on political platform and policies, this race would be a far better example of democracy in action.

PP, I guess maybe we should go back to having poll taxes and literacy tests in order to vote, right?? Maybe we can even remove the 15th Amendment while we're at it so that the "rabble" can't all vote.

This chip-on-the-shoulder attitude is what I get from Bowser. Thin skinned and ready to fire first.

+1. Exactly the same contentless attitude-ridden babble that is her trademark.

No, I was thinking more along the lines of issuing fines to people who can and choose not to vote. At least if we had better voter turnout, the throwaway votes -- like those cast on the color of one's skin or sexual orientation would probably cancel each other out just by sheer volume. But I like the way you think

Holding one's government officials accountable and expecting them to do the right thing is being "elitist" and "overly-entitled?" Expecting value for one's hard-earned taxpayer dollars is "indulgent" and "overly-entitled?" Pfffft. Your rhetoric is pretty lame. No, scratch that, your rhetoric is asinine.

You misunderstand the purpose of DC Government as requiring a servant mentality. DC Government was constructed to help build and sustain a new middle class in DC. It's worked well and has extended into PG County somewhat. It's not a good idea or time to upset things.

"It's worked well and has extended into PG County somewhat?" If it worked well, it would be attractive for citizens to stay in DC as they improve their lifestyle, rather than fleeing to the suburbs. So your argument runs counter to itself.

As for the rest, sorry, but I'm not into authoritarianism or fascism where the people have no say or voice. You need to understand something at a fundamental level. Whether DC or any other city in America, government officials *are* public servants. And, the Mayor and Council in particular, are there serving at the pleasure of the voting citizen, and are there to represent the will of the citizen constituent. If you don't understand that, you've flunked Civics 101. Many people seem to forget that they have a voice in politics, and folks like you seem to want to not only exploit that suppression of the citizen's voice, but also to try and demonize those of us who know better by trying to call us "indulgent" and "elitist" and "overly-entitled". Sorry, but no.

Anonymous wrote:Voted for Catania myself. But still worried about whether he will keep Kaya Henderson in place. Their relationship hasn't been easy. And I think she's the right person for that Job at this critical point. Those who know more: what do you think?

Henderson and Catania's relationship is public, even the bumps. When they challenge each other, it's been open and not nearly the gladiator type sparring with Rhree. They're also both DC-loving Hoyas of the same epoch. So if they couldn't get along, things would be really awkward on the Hilltop.

That said. Henderson's five year strategic plan started after Rhee left. She's been handed her boss's boundary plan and told to implement it now. She agreed to do it. But now she's faced with a potential boss who says "screw what you said you were going to do, start over and give everyone Deal middle school even though it hasn't been studied or funded. A bunch of people will be coming to your table to do the restart. I don't know how much they know about education. You'll figure it out." Or she could have a who would say "I got this education stuff for a little while. You can hold off on boundary changes and take another year to implement your strategy while charters are basically put on hold. Anybody who should be at the table is already there."

Henderson is a lot of things, but stupid is not one of them.

Which would you pick?

CATANIA!!!!! No offense, but my EoTP school is going down hill. That's not what I call progress. And quite frankly, you have a problem with candor and transparency that permeates DCPS central - especially on safety issues; that's a non-starter.

What exactly is Catania going to do for your EOTP school? Is he going to do any of the stuff that the peer reviewed research says works: guaranteed access to inbounds pre k(oh wait, the outgoing mayor has addressed that), targeted feedback for teachers, and proven curricula? I don't see any of that in his education "plan". I don't mean to suggest that Bowser will do any of that stuff either, but to suggest that Catania is going to trn your school around seems farfetched.
