what was your favorite meal your mom made growing up?

Slumgullion -- basically a tomato based stew with ground beef. Yum.

My three favorite dishes my Mom made were (she's gone now): A buttermilk based beef strogonaf , Scottish Mince with Sauerkraut and peas. And goulash (actually a beef stew)

Mom: Taco salad with Doritos.
Dad: Lamb curry with rice and a ton of condiments. Sister and I got to pull out the "special" spoons (demi-tasse) to use in all of the dishes for the condiments.

Chicken a la King was another favorite. Don't remember which parent made it.

Both parents were amazing cooks. The taco salad was the one "junky" meal my mom made, which is probably why I liked it so much.

Latkes, charoset, and Thanksgiving stuffing. Mom was a very good cook of holiday foods, and a not-so-great cook of everyday foods. By my senior year I discovered frozen meals and thought they were super exciting. I kind of knew that frozen Salisbury steak a la TV dinner was gross, but at the same time I'd never had anything like it (Mom's everyday repertoire was limited to chicken, turkey, trout, and turkey burgers -- all plain and completely unseasoned). When I went off to college, I discovered a whole new world of foods, like meatballs and chicken patty, that I'd never tasted. Now when my mom comes over, I cook!

It's a tie between my Jewish mom's chicken parmegiana and sweet sausage and pepper sandwiches on thick italian bread
. None of us touch the stuff anymore, but it was mouthwatering!

Mom- tuna noodle casserole and goulash were my favorites. Since that was about all she could cook except canned soup, it's pretty good I liked it.

Dad- meatloaf. He made really excellent meatloaf. I didn't even know meatloaf could be good until he put it in rotation during my nights at his house.

I don't make it often, but I apparently inherited Dad's meatloaf skill and can turn out a pretty great one. Not as great as his, but pretty darn good.

Recently, I decided to try tuna noodle casserole for the first time. Got a recipe from the internet for slow cooker tuna casserole.

It was just...so. very. very. bad.

This thread is making me sad. My mom was a horrible cook. Favorite meal she ever served was Honey Baked Ham.

My mom makes something she refers to as Sinful Mac and Cheese, which is a box of Kraft mac and cheese, a can of cream of mushroom soup and about a cup of frozen peas. We make it together about once a year while the rest of the family looks on in horror. I digestively regret it for about a day after, between the sodium and the fat content, but it's horrifically delicious.

From her non-revolting repertoire, she makes a creole noodle dish that's awesome that I can't imitate for the life of me. It's red beans, green peppers, fennel seeds, paprika tossed with pasta of whatever shape.

Salmon cakes - like crab cakes but made with canned salmon. The cakes themselves were fine, but I really loved eating the canned salmon bones

Cabbage and kielbasa in the crockpot, with caraway and hot mustard - YUM. I would still make this but I am the inly person in my house who would eat it, and a whole crockpot full is A LOT

Similarly, kale and smoked (pork?) neck in the crockpot. It's the reason I have always loved kale. Mom stopped making it about 10-15 years ago when she said smoked neck was getting harder to find in grocery stores.

Two dishes that she still makes for family holidays, and which I still love - sauerkraut and fresh kielbasa, and seven layer salad.

I've gotten pretty close on the others but still can't touch her gumbo. And I make a pretty good gumbo.
