It's nice to hear the social dynamics at Singer are good, but the academic performance of black and FARMS students on state tests is not impressive, and achievement goals are not being met.

It is a brand new school. The only testing done was MSA after it was no longer aligned. You can't tell anything yet from test scores.

What's interesting is that Georgian Forest isn't a strand 5 school despite being title I and 80% farms (unless I missed them on the list). So some schools obviously do a better job meeting the needs of low income kids than others.

I am confused. Isn't free breakfast for low-income kids or is it for all kids? Even if offered, wouldn't most families who are not low-income have their kids eat breakfast at home? Why is the OP worried about her kids eating junk food? Why would they be eating breakfast at school?

1) because it is offered to all kids in some schools so then your kid is the oddball sometimes if they do NOT eat it.
2) my kid eats breakfast at home but at about 6:15 while leaving the house at 8. She eats lunch at 12:45. If she did not eat the breakfast at school she would get no snack which would not work well at all.

The strands have to do with progress not just achievement. A low performing school who makes progress would have a higher rating than a school with high performance that just maintains. That explains why there are some well regarded schools listed. I think they still qualify for extra resources which seems a bit questionable to me..

Comparatively, likely yes. My point was that there are people in the area that are concerned about the school and choose to send their children elsewhere. Frankly, the elementary is not as much of a concern as the middle and high school. I think people who are fans of Flora Singer like the new building and friendly staff but when the teachers have to focus a lot of the time on the children that are below average, the other kids don't get as much attention and there is less time to go beyond the curriculum. The first year of scores are not a positive sign and only time will tell.

How early do you have to get your kid there for the free breakfast?

Can the ones that come in at normal starting time get a free snack or something? Seems a little unfair to those with later schedules.

You have no idea what you are talking about. FSES is one of the only MCPS schools that offers pullouts for academically advanced students starting in third grade. Everyone is always complaining on here about how their kid isn't being taught advanced work- that has actually happened the last two years at Singer.
