Germany occupied most of Europe. The Soviets could have ended civilization as we know it in a nuclear firestorm. Al Qaeda might be able to blow up a building.

blowing up a building is not huge to you? People like you and me did not go home to tuck their kids in bed . Life ad we knew it in dc and NY ground to a halt. Our culture changed ..i am not worried about the statistics of it happening to me. I don't want this for anyone in my country.

I don't want our society to become less free because of fear. It takes backbone to live free.

According to this the odds of being killed in a terrorist attack are 20 million to 1.

The odds of being killed by heart disease are 467 to 1.

Thus you are over 40,000 times more likely to die of heart failure than a terrorist attack.

Oooooohhhh! Are you afraid of killer doughnuts?

Obama is making us fat.

Quick, call Darrell Issa and the rest of the insane clown posse.

We need a special prosecutor and an impeachment panel, pronto... Ahhhhhhhhrrrrrrrrgggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Daniel Kahnemann and Cass Sunstein have written about this over reaction to low probability events. It is irrational but built into some people's nature. Kahnemann and Tversky won the Nobel based on their Prospect theory that describes this phenomenon.

I'm not really concerned about terrorist acts from the 70s...I'm more concerned about acts of terrorism that could happen now. And I'm not worried about the crazy white kid in the movie theater---I'm worried about a coordinated act of terrorism by an extremist Muslim group (or the crazy American who has joined their jihad).

You can be concerned all you want, but there haven't been that many coordinated acts of terrorism, here or abroad.

Yet...and that's what we are worried about.

Great, other people are worried about cancer or drunk drivers or lightning bolts. I see little to justify your worry.

I suppose $650 billion for defense and $45 billion for homeland security isn't enough. Great! Let's raise your taxes.

We can't let terrorist groups grow to the point they already have where they are essentially running countries by creating chaos, kidnapping boys to grow their armies, burning down villages, etc. We've lost control, and now they are successfully recruiting Americans to go over there and fight with them. If we don't want to address these issues abroad, then the only solution is to prevent folks from those countries from enetering the US (which will never happen). Something will happen. Quite frankly, I'm surprised nothing has happened yet. I can't tell you how many middle eastern men I've seen in DC taking photos of bizarre things. Like stepping out into H Street at 15th and taking pics of the street. Ditto for the underpass at DuPont circle. And I called the no emergency line to give the tags of a car with a few middle eastern young men where two of the passengers were videotaping outside both windows as they drove up 16th. Flame away about how I'm being a stereotypical racist and they were probably just tourists, but I followed up with someone I know in DC homeland security, and one of the guys I had reported for photographing odd things (like grates) was arrested. Apparently he had compiled tons of photos of targets and geographic info. He was detained a few years ago though.

Thank you for being alert and aware. You will have saved lives, make no mistake about it

Yes. I am scared for the state of the world, terrorist attacks, AND the loss of civil liberties under the patriot act that a previous poster mentioned. In many ways we are no longer "land of the free".
