How so? MONA is Mothers of North Arlington and welcomes any parent in....north Arlington

oh relax poster - she was just saying it's very restrictive to the zip codes.
many of the DC ones aren't restrictive to the zip codes, and you can join if you are close to that neighborhood.

Exactly why MONA has the reputation that it does.

I am not faced with this problem because my neighborhood has its own parent listserv, but I was wondering what the purpose of the restrictive zip code policy on other listservs is. Your response makes me think it's to exclude people from adjacent possibly poorer neighborhoods. Is that the case?

I live in Lorton and asked about this a while ago, and it didn't seem like there were any Lorton/Burke area listservs, so you just inspired me to create one. It's called "123 Parents" (for parents who live near or around Route 123 in Lorton and Fairfax Station) on Google Groups. You're welcome to be the first subscriber other than me!

(To join 123 Parents, you need a Google or Gmail account, but emails can be sent to any email address you want.)

Hope other area moms and dads will join!

To find 123 Parents, go to http://groups.google.com, and search for 123 Parents in the search box. Then sign in to Google and request to join the group.

Oh. Is it a bad rep? I am pregnant, FTM in North Arlington. I dont live in one of the $1m houses though. I guess we are "middle class" in our condo. Will we not fit here? I have lots of friends in the area with kids but we are the only ones in North Arlington so I was hoping for a good place for resources closer to my neighborhood. Should I skip MONA?

MONA is a fantastic resource with well over 1000 members. You will not only fit in but be very glad you joined, I am sure. You can join a playgroup or create one of your own, seek advice on just about anything without getting slammed (a la DCUM), join or start a group that matches your interest, take your baby on group outings, have a moms night out, have (free) meals delivered after your baby is born, find or sell kid clothes and equipment on the marketplace listserv, participate in community service initiatives, and join the board or a committee if you'd like to help run the organization. And lots of stuff I'm forgetting.

Makes me want to move to Arlington as a new parent. I can't find anyone to connect as an AMA FTM in Burke.

FYI - I went to check out the Momsclub.org website mentioned by a prior poster, but it turns out it's only for SAHMs

+1. MONA is a seriously great organization. I have no idea what PP is insinuating about its reputation unless she's just pissed that they require a N. Arlington address to join.

I'm an AMA FTM in Lorton just down 123 from Burke. Join the 123 Parents Google group!

For MONA, I live in one of the blessed zip codes, but the fee seems a bit high for something I can't really see what I'm getting (most everything is password protected), and despite what PPs have said appears to be geared towards SAHMs.

Are there any other local listsevs?

Anyone know of any in the Fairfax/Annandale area? Or even Fairfax City?

Seriously 20:05? Read upthread. MONA is a terrific organization with so much to offer - playgroups, subsidized outings, monamarketplace to buy and sell kids stuff and tons more. Trust me, it's worth it.

Not a listserv, but Mamistad (on meetup.com) has a 35+ group as well as its more standard by-due-date (or birth date) groups. There are several 35+ moms in my FTM group.

And I should have mentioned, I am in Fairfax, though most of my group members are in Arlington or Annandale. There is a Reston Mamistad if that works better for you.

Any thoughts on DC Metro Mommies yahoo group? From what I can tell it has local chapters but I haven't joined yet.
Anonymous
I can't find anything about the Reston mamistad. Got sent to a dead link.

Any list servs for Herndon/Reston?

NP here. Everything I hear about MONA is that it's super awesome, but if you are .25 mi away from N Arlington like me it is a bit like watching the cool kids in the cafeteria from the new kids table. I think that was what the PP was referring to about it's restrictive rep. But if you are in MONA, definitely don't miss out.
