How much leave do you take each year?

My current (non-profit) job is the standard 10 fed holidays, plus ~15 days/year vacation, and 10 sick.

My previous job, also a respected non-profit in the area, gave no sick or vacation, and we had 3 holiday chosen days per office (global org, US went with xmas, new years, and July 4). The upside was that we had 1:1 comp time, but wow did it suck until you worked up a buffer of comp hours.

Makes me so jealous. I'm a 50 year old engineer working for a big federal contractor - 9 holidays, 20 combined sick/vacation days. I had it better 20 years ago (when I worked for a big federal contractor)

What do you have to be so jealous about? Unless that person takes every one of their sick days it seems you are better off.

My husband's job gives him 5 weeks - all kinds combined. They have a use it or loose it policy. I would say he maybe takes 2 weeks total though because it is hard for him to get off. I SAH so there is no leave... although in December I had a bad case of the flu and my husband was able to take a day off so I could rest in bed. Most luxurious day in 4 years of being a mom!

I get 4 weeks as a fed but have taken very little to save for two maternity leaves. In the future I plan to take two to three weeks until I reach use or use level (6 weeks banked). My husband started a new job with very little leave so it's hard for us to travel far anyway.

I know a lot of feds do that "save until you reach use or lose level" but I just don't get it. I probably have 6 weeks or more of sick leave banked, but I have probably 6 hours of vacation.

Agreed. I get 12 sick days at my org, but would rather they designate all leave as PTO because IME, taking most/all of your sick days is frowned on.

I don't get it either. It's like some weird hoarder obsession. Makes it even worse when they come to work obviously sick.

Reminds me of folks living in rundown homes while they designate every spare penny to a retirement account.

I work for a federal contractor and we accrue leave each pay period. They just changed the leave policy to have a new, lower "use it or lose it" threshold. Starting next month lots of folks will earn no more leave until they work down their bank to the new threshold. Some people will not earn any new leave for a couple years until they work down their banked leave. Ha! That'll teach 'em. (says the guy who has zero banked leave)

Every minute I can get. 10 days vacation, 2 personal days, 2 volunteer days, as many sick days as I need (I get up to 12, I think). We have half days on Friday in the summer and I work whole days so that I can save up 3-4 extra full days off for long weekend trips.

I work with a lot of attorneys who get 23 days of annual leave per year but can't take more than three weeks without seriously inconveniencing their colleagues. It's not hard to bank a week or two each year under those circumstances.

I've been a fed for 21 years, that's how.

Yes, inconveniencing my colleagues AND working while on vacation. What's the point of that? I don't want to burn leave unless I'm really not working.

Feds don't get short term disability, so saving up leave is smart in case of a need to be out for a while. For fed women, its also the only way to get a paid maternity leave.
I've always liked having a cushion of leave wherever I've worked. Just the kind of person I am. I also have plenty of toilet paper in my house, and an emergency kit in the car.

I would not work at a job where I could not take off 3 non-consecutive weeks within a given year. That's absurd.
