How much leave do you take each year?

Anonymous
I own my own business and haven't had a vacation day in the past 3 years (other than snow days when I close the office.) My staff gets earned vacation----up to three weeks a year, and I have 8 employees, of which 7 are full time (and get 3 weeks a year) and one that is part time (and gets none).

I don't get it either. It's like some weird hoarder obsession. Makes it even worse when they come to work obviously sick.

Reminds me of folks living in rundown homes while they designate every spare penny to a retirement account.

? Sick leave is different than annual, and is not "use or lose."

I work with a lot of attorneys who get 23 days of annual leave per year but can't take more than three weeks without seriously inconveniencing their colleagues. It's not hard to bank a week or two each year under those circumstances.

I would not work at a job where I could not take off 3 non-consecutive weeks within a given year. That's absurd.

I've always liked having a cushion of leave wherever I've worked. Just the kind of person I am. I also have plenty of toilet paper in my house, and an emergency kit in the car.

I don't take leave unless I have a reason. I wouldn't take a day off just to do nothing. I have more time to do "nothing" on the weekends than I need.

Not sure what difference it makes, but six figures.

PP, I asked because if I made less, I'd be more motivated to use 3 weeks a year. Part of the reason I make good money (to me, at least) is that my employer is paying me to cover my job. I have no backup.

I get three weeks vac, 1 week sick, 1 personal day per year. Generous carry over is allowed for vac and sick. I should be moving to 4 weeks vac very soon (see "asinine things your boss does").
Typically I have been taking 1-2 full weeks per year, like a week in March and a week in Sept. A day or half-day here or there. Half days here and there for doctors appts. The trick is, I have to record every minute I work, and if the pay period total is over 80 I don't have to use vac/sick. So quite often those 1/2 days wind up being "Free".
I have been trying to bank, because we are planning #2 in a couple years, and I would love to take off more time after the birth (paid). Once we are past the need for mat leave, I plan to end each year with one or two days in the bank just in case
