what is the best wedding gift you received?

Gift card to a store they like or a visa or american express gift card for the amount you would have spent on a gift item...this way they can get EXACTLY what they need.

A gorgeous, warm mohair throw from Ireland. It is on our livingroom sofa and I use it every day when it's cold out.

We got a wine of the month club for a year and the wine glasses we registered for. It was a great gift.

We also got a grill, and some beautiful champagne flutes from waterford that we use all of the time for special occasions. All great presents!

My father's best friend gave us two sets of framed photos with 3 pictures in each frame. They included a wedding or anniversary photo from both my grandparents, and my parents (3 total in one frames). In the same sized frame my wife's grandparents and in-laws wedding pictures. (3 as well). They are have always graced our walls (6 moves) since 1998 with our wedding picture in the middle.

The best and more enchanting gift was a vacation from my in- laws.

Crystal 5x5 frame. Could put our favorite wedding proof in it right away. Never tarnishes. Crystal biscuit jar--the top was received broken but the short barrel shape has been perfect for short-stemmed bunches of flowers like tulips so I use it as a vase. We've kept almost everything that wasn't a duplicate since we treasure that people picked it out especially for us.

OP here. Thanks very much for all the responses. These have given me some ideas. I have enjoyed reading these. Keep them coming!

There is actually very little that people have mentioned that I would have liked receiving as a gift. DH and I are casual people, don't really drink, have no use for crystal or Tiffany, and have no room for kitchen appliances. Honestly, OP, you know the couple best but I tend to think registry, cash gift, or gift card to a store you know they'll like is your best bet.

Pretty much anything that i registered for (exception - some of the formal dinnerware pieces but that's my fault).

We got this gigantic pottery bowl that i didn't like at first (too kitchy) but now after 15 years use all the time.

Not that we necessarily need to spend a ton but I want to get her something she will enjoy for years to come and that will be special for them. She has done a lot for me over the years and I'd like to do something nice for her to mark this occasion.

She has registered, but only for very basic stuff (inexpensive china for daily use, towels, and some inexpensive kitchen items.)

I am debating whether to try to ask her (indirectly) if there is something they want but did not register for (e.g., a piece of furniture for their new place, maybe an expensive kitchen appliance -- they both love to cook). But I don't know that I'll be able to get a suggestion out of her without being obvious about what I'm doing, and she would never ask me to buy her something $$$$.

Any suggestions? I know this is a personal thing and I need to think about her individually and what she might like, but I am hoping to get some ideas from those of you who received something you loved. Oh, and I don't want to give cash. Thanks!

Most people don't have a nice cake knife. Many do get one as part of the wedding gifts and then use it at the reception. http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/vera-wang-wedgwood-with-love-cake-knife-server?ID=302044&CategoryID=7923&LinkType=#fn=BRAND%3DVera Wang%26sp%3D1%26spc%3D29%26ruleId%3D69%26slotId%3D1
