There is much to admire in Sarah Palin's background. There is also much to admire in Dara Torres, the 41-year-old Olympic swimming medalist. Does that make her a good candidate to be Vice President?
My point is that there are millions of extremely likeable and admirable people (men and women) in America, but almost none of them have what it takes to be one (72-year-old) life away from the presidency. It's not a good thing when presidential races are framed in terms of personality and likeability because it moves the debate away from how the candidates would actually govern and where they stand on the issues. Remember all the talk about how people would much rather have a beer with George Bush than with Gore or Kerry? Look where that got us. Candidates' personalities are not irrelevant- they often affect how they make key decisions. But even more important is what they believe in and what their vision is for the country. On those counts, Sarah Palin is pretty far removed from most American women. I hope voters who find Palin's background attractive will decide whether it's more important for the Vice President to be a woman they admire on a personal level or whether it's more imporant to have a president who's going to promote a pro-woman agenda (choice, health-care, education, equal pay, etc.) that will have a truly positive affect on their lives. |
Love it. |
Now that's a fair and balanced portrayal of the campaign! And as everyone knows, John Kerry's own mother was the driving force behind "Unfit for Command." [OK, so I don't actually know whether John Kerry's mother was even alive in 2004...but that's exactly the kind of detail that distracts from the larger narrative that the American people really care about.] |
The title of this thread is a non sequitur unless I am mistaken that Palin is opposed to abortion even in cases of rape. So now you are just "for Palin."
And with regard to the post above - could someone fill me in on what about Palin's background is so admirable? |
How about the fact that she's the governor with the highest approval rating in the nation? |
This place is teeming with Obama fans. Not so much HRC fans (pre Dem. convention)at DCUM - I thought HRC was more of a middle of the road Dem. as opposed to Obama whom I consider far left. |
...of a state with far fewer residents than Fairfax County. What else ya got? |
All this jibber-jabber about who's right and who's left on DCUM is truly pointless. Can we move on? |
"I thought HRC was more of a middle of the road Dem. as opposed to Obama whom I consider far left"
Obama is not far left at all and neither is Biden. Seriously, Kerry was far more liberal and one of the problems during the Dem primary was that there simply was not too much space within the issues to separate HRC and Obama. This is a centrist Dem vs conservative Rep battle and a good indicator of the strength of the conservative Republican faction. So will we all move two steps to the right or stay in the middle. |

OK, is that enough now? Let's. Move. On. Real issues, anyone? |
Um, why are you on a forum entitled "Political Discussion?" Probably better to go to "Off-Topic" and discuss nail salons or something... |
Oh I understand now. Thank you for clarifying. If I were to live in a small state (low population state), I guess I shouldn't bother voting then. Obviously I couldn't be electing anyone qualified. And even if I did, my approval or disapproval of that person wouldn't count anyway. |
As if! What planet are you on? They're not really that far apart on the issues and Clinton's health plan was further left than Obama's. |
And I have to wonder what the rationale is for all those Californians who elected The Terminator. |
