OK, I work in Democratic politics, so I cannot say this in public. But I have to admit, the more I read, the more I like her. And I am grossed out by the easy way the liberal feminist groups are willing to attack her, without even noting her accomplishments. She has no record on equal pay, and her birth control record is good. So I guess it's just because she's pro-life and a Republican. But Harry Reid is Pro-life, and they don't attack him, so I guess it's really the Republican thing.
The day her nomination was announced I bought her biography "Sarah: How a Hockey Mom Turned Alaska's Political Establishment Upside Down" online. It just arrived today. I was surprised to learn that a lot of the Democratic talking points about her (including the ones my husband uses) are just really not fair. Her track record in Wasilla is pretty good (not perfect, but whose is?), and her reform credentials are really legit. The Republican party in Alaska HATED her, and refused to support her financially after she won the nomination for Gov. She called Murkowski and others on their corruption- and had a real Obama style people-powered campaign. I am so bummed that as Dems we can't admit that a Republican might have some redeeming value, and that maybe we could learn something from her and her pretty cool experience in Alaska. |
It's not the Republican thing... it's the "totally unqualified" thing. |
We have yet to see her discuss any redeeming values. All she does is attack Obama with snide remarks and tell the same tired lies about saying "no thanks" to something she supported and the funds for which she kept. I have strong doubts that she was disliked by Alaska Republicans given that she ran for Governor with the endorsements of Ted Stevens and Don Young, two of the most corrupt Alaskan Republicans. She actually served as a director on Stevens' 527 group. But, keep on deluding yourself that she is more in line with your alleged Democratic policy views than Obama and Biden. |
I'm pro choice as well and a Palin fan (I'm a registered independant). I too see nothing in the decisions that she has made that points her to trying to impose her religious views on the rest of us. She actually has made some decisions that would upset many evangellicals (although, I don't think that will matter since they are completely smitten with her).
|
They actually had a piece on the Today show today that noted that Alaska has one of the most liberal abortion laws in the country and she did nothing to try to change that. I like her too. Yes, she's inexperienced...but so is Obama. Obama and McCain both scare me for opposite reasons. I wish there was a choice c.
And if we're going to harp on Palin's "lies", is anyone going to mention Biden's plagiaristic past, or the fact that he lied on more than one occasion by saying his wife and daughter were killed by a drunk driver? How do you think that made the innocent man's family feel? So nobody's perfect. |
Can you point me to any current commercials or speeches in which Biden has plagiarized or been untruthful about his wife and daughter? Biden has already paid a price for those missteps (and I'm only assuming you are correct about the drunk driver -- I've never heard that story). The "Bridge to Nowhere" lie is part of Palin's current stump speech and part of a just released commercial. Its one of the points used to define her. That's hardly true about Biden. |
That would be why I said "past". And just google Biden accident drunk driver. Tons of hits. I stumbled on it when I was trying to find out what happened to his wife and daughter (at which point I had only googled Biden wife accident). My point was not really to criticize Biden. I think it was a crappy thing to do. And actually, he did it gratuitously, whereas Palin is probably under pressure from the campaign (not that I think she should give in to such pressures... I'm just saying it's not "just for the heck of it.") All I'm saying is people are jumping all over her for every little thing, and I think they are just ignoring missteps by other candidates. People make them; true. Errors in judgement, yes. But they ALL do it. Maybe it's just because I've been reading these boards, but she is the only one I ever hear about, and she's not even at the top of the ticket!! |

What price did Biden pay for his plagiarism, which I might add was about his personal narrative? Stealing a whole narrative (which did not even make sense) to describe your own personal history is so pathetic. And most of his rantings are gratuitous -- just watch the Alito or Roberts hearings - he made a fool of himself. Oh, and shocker that he has not tried to define himself around his lies about his wife's accident or his plagiarism. Ridiculous. |
I was totally ready to vote for McCain, so my current anybody-except-the-GOP position is NOT about 'the Republican thing.' For me, a non-partisan, it's about
1) her religious views, esp the *slightly* too convenient idea that God supports Palin's policy positions 2) her lack of qualification 3) her style: belligerent and snide from my pov, obviously others (like those mysterious people who said they'd like to have a beer with george bush) feel differently...vive la difference 4) the people who do support her: the rabid right is apparently totally psyched about her, which isn't dispositive for me but is a strong signal It might be that as I learn more in the next few weeks I'll drift back toward McCain, but Palin has pushed me from lean-McCain to sit-in-Obama's-lap. And at least wrt my vote, the original post could not be more wrong. |
Very good points, PP 9:26. I especially want to emphasize your point #4 about people who support her. Those "psyched about Palin supposed Dems" sure picked a good company.

After reading that link from the Delaware newspaper, I would think Biden would be much more careful with his words. That is a truly sad story for everyone involved. |
How many times did Biden plagiarize? Was it at every speech he gave? |
The drunk-driver story was a longtime staple of Biden's. It was a lie. He is still prone to major distortions. For example, on Meet the Press this weekend Biden took credit for the recent success in Iraq. He went on and on and on with a number of significant distortions related to Iraq and Obama's position on Iraq, but the upshot was that they're doing exactly what he said they should do all along. This ignores his long-held belief that Iraq should be partitioned into three territories:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26590488/ Then Jake Tapper and Matt Jaffe report on his answer to a reporter's question about whether he still believes in a tripartite solution to Iraq's issues. You can go to Tapper's blog to read Biden's answer, which ran for 13 minutes. I think there are some distortions in there but I swear to God I can't follow it long enough to tell: http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/09/oh-that-joe-n-5.html It's fair to question what answers Governor Palin will give to such questions. But I suspect I'm not alone in thinking Senator Biden isn't handling them so very well. I saw some video of Palin explaining the Bridge to Nowhere reversal. I'll see if I can find it. |
Biden was found to have plagarized in law school and lied about it during the 1987 Bork hearings. Here is an NYT story about it, published in 1987: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9B0DE5DD173BF934A2575AC0A961948260 The 1988 plagarism incident was part of his standard presidential stump speech for awhile but he stopped when someone recognized that he was using Kinnock's words. This was part of why he dropped out of the presidential race in 1988. The more significant reason was that he lied about his academic record. Here's the video of that incident. Almost everything he says in it is a lie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1j0FS0Z6ho. So let's not pretend Palin is the only prevaricator here, folks. |
