Op here: I work ft now in dc and I don't want to find another ft job and then hope I can cut back to pt. Rather, I am hoping to find a pt job at the outset. Willing to take a pay cut since I am hoping to reduce my commute and find something in the burbs (montgomery, Howard, pg). Just trying to cut back and simplify. Willing to work Monday thru Friday...just hoping to work reduced hours (5 or 6 per day).

OP - why don't you just make a proposal to your employer to cut back? if they say no, then you know what you have to do...

Obviously the first thing I did was approach my employer about cutting back....but it's not something that is done in my office (they don't want the flood gates to open with similar requests, so they wont approve it).

This is exactly the problem in my office (the floodgate opening problem) and why I'd recommend against going FT somewhere else with the hopes that you can convert. I think it's hard to find PT work, but if that's what you want, it doesn't make sense to go the FT route hoping for a change. I know so many women caught in the position of hoping that eventually they'll get that out of their employer. The bottom line is that if your employer hires you FT, they want you FT and they can always find someone else to take your place.
