What Churchill outrage? The ones complaining about the Churchill-booster-purchased scoreboard are not from Churchill (I guess the complainers don't want to see the scoreboard when they travel to Churchill as the visiting team). |
So what do you cal the parents who live in scotland? Churchill has plenty of students that get $$ for scotland and a few other spots. where are the boosters for the library? the band etc? sports are king at all schools they bring in money.. |
Obviously sports brings in money. There is an admission charge to most sporting events. People attend also want to eat thus the concession stands. The county does not fund the sports programs. The school has to buy their own uniforms and equipment. The county does fund the library and buys the computers and books. That is the difference. Without booster clubs there wouldn't be sports. |
Our school has a sports boosters but also does fundraising for Debate, drama, and music among others. There is an educational foundation that does fundraising for things like library, computers, etc. so while the sports aspect tends to be visible its not the only thing parents support. |
Sounds like what the OP would like is to tax the Churchill parents more and redistribute the proceeds to schools in less wealthy areas.
Problem is that MoCo already spends more money per student in the Downcounty area, and doesn't want to exacerbate the flight of higher achieving students to private schools and other jurisdictions. So OP should just suck it up or look for ways to convince private benefactors to give money to her school's projects. |
When did I ever say anything about taxing and redistribution??? I said it was difficult to see this display of wealth when schools in the county are struggling with basic necessities. Not trying to drive away your superior children to other school districts or privates. |
This score board is the only thing that you're upset about when you might go there to a game once a year? It's the only thing you think your kids will notice in the difference of schools and neighborhood? That's ridiculous. I have no idea how much a scoreboard costs and whether it's a good investment, but who cares? As you agreed, it won't make those kids any smarter than yours. |
How about this - for all you Churchill parents - the gym floor which many of your children have daily gym class let alone sports on is unsafe. That's right unsafe. Not been repaired (sanded, painted and re-coated) for more than 10 years. Multiple injuries that have not been widely publicized. Worst floor in the county. It costs $15-20k to fix it but the Churchill booster Club and administration would rather prioritize the scoreboard. I've got no problem with the scoreboard in principle but where are the priorities? |
Multiple injuries? Please. Varsity and JV basketball and volleyball is played on that floor. Name the injuries and players involved. Bet you can't. |
Bet I can. I won't name student names but if you ask a few of the coaches and gym teachers they can confirm. 2008-09 at least 3 concussions and a knee cartilage injury suffered from slipping on the floor. All non-contact. Also that year a serious ACL injury was suffered in a gym class again reportedly non-contact. 2009-10 several ankle sprains, a knee injury and at least one concussion again all non-contact. 2010-11 broken fibula from slipping again non-contact that should have resulted in a lawsuit but the parent didn't want to be in the position of suing Churchill/MCPS but was told he had a good case due to an earlier letter that was sent to MCPS detailing the unsafe floor condition. Again, these were detailed in writing to MCPS and Churchill administration. You don't want to go there - ask for MCPS to disclose the letter - it's all there. And that doesn't even cover any injuries in gym classes and other users I'm not aware of but which Churchill is required to keep records of - bet there are others. Ask any coach who has the worst gym floor in the county and I'll bet Churchill is everyone's top 3. |
That's because the only thing people care about is football. That's where the big money is, always has been, and always will be. Shame. |
Since when was MCPS about our children? The Gazette reports that giving teachers TWO raises will leave little money for OUR children' s needs. We have a superintendent who walks around claiming he is a social justice warrior while sending his kids to the best schools, running around with bodyguards, and pandering to the unions. Since when did MCPS care about anything more than filling their pockets with our tax dollars? |
The Churchill Administration and MCPS doesn't care about the gym floor. They don't even maintain the crappy condition it is in. They allow football, lax and field hockey to use the gym with sticks and helmets. I've seen football helmets thrown to the floor and sticks marking up the floor. I've even seen kids with football cleats on in there. They allow lunchtime basketball in street shoes. The whole thing is a joke but then they'll feign concern when someone gets hurt just so they don't get their asses sued. Rumor has it you might be reading/hearing about this fiasco in the news shortly as several are investigating. If that's true, it will be a black eye for Churchill. Promise.
As for the Booster Club, I have no problem with them spending money they raised through their hard work or donations. Life is not fair and just because 20854 has more resources they shouldn't be prohibited from using them as long as taxpayer dollars aren't involved. All the bs earlier in this thread about "rich people" is just pure jealousy. And the dumb comment that all rich people think poor people are lazy is just as dumb as the comment that all poor people are lazy. All rich people don't act/think alike any more than all poor people do. And for the record "rich" is a relative term these days. There are plenty who attend Churchill who are not "rich" in a real sense just richer than some of their counterparts. Stop counting other people's money and worry about your own. |
And this brings us full circle to one of the best comments earlier in the thread about defensive rich people being funny. |
