You are going to have a tough time proving concerted mob action here, since none of us know who each other are.
And what rights as an American citizen are being impeded on? The right to act like a jerk on the internet? The right to be mean to people with handicapped children? Please explain. Also, provide the laws against mob mentality bullying and harassment that we are violating. I'd be interested to see the legislation. By the way "freedom of speech" protects against government intrusion into speech. Doesn't protect against your fellow citizens. |

8:21 - thank you, on their behalf, as they are great people! I think the ugly neighbors behavior stems from the ugly neighbors jealousy. In spite of one neighbor having MS and the other neighbor having an illness (which eats her body away from the inside), they are two of the best parents I know, are pretty, smart, accomplished and successful. We live in a neighborhood that values bitter, unfortunately. I have never seen anything like it, it's crazy. But, it says far more about the ugly neighbors by their reaction, than the sick neighbors beautiful lives! In fact, I wish the "sick" neighbors more beauty, they deserve it!
But in all seriousness, I do wish the ugly neighbors would get the mental help they so clearly need. I agree with PPs that a mob mentality and mob bullying can exist. If the victims have proof (our beautiful neighbors do) then they have it made! There are many legal measures that can be taken. Ask an attorney who is practiced in the field. It may be well worth it to have him on retainer! I strongly suspect the beautiful neighbors do, though they generally keep to themselves about such matters. Funny, the ugly neighbors are so concerned about what the beautiful neighbors are doing, yet the latter could not care less about the former! How many times have we seen THAT?!?!
OP, don't be that ugly neighbor. It's obvious and so unbecoming. Decide to be better than that. |

In reference to the word 'retarded': I'm of two minds on this one. My younger sister, 35, has a cognitive disability and when I try to explain it to others, I frequently find myself saying, "What we used to refer to as 'mentally retarded". People then get it right away and there's no more confusion. But: this word has so much historically loaded significance. And unfortunately, the people most likely in this day and age to use the word 'retarded' also always seem to be the folks (I'm speaking only from my own experience here) who use it in a pejorative sense. We can't win for losing.
With quick reference to the ARC (Associated of Retarded Citizens): this has been a hot-button issue for YEARS with the group. On the one hand, obviously, the longer we kep this name, the more out of touch we seem. On the other hand, as a purely practical matter, it's no small thing for a non-profit organization to give up the name recognition and support that comes with a familiar 'brand name' like ARC. I still would'nt be surprised to see it changed eventually, though, just as the National Polio Organization (I think) eventually became the March of Dimes. |

When i was in middle school/higj school , the use of the word retarded became derogatory and mean spirited (kind of like how people used to say thats so gay). Anyways, i had a teacher explain it to us this way:. Calling a black person colored is technically correct because they have colored skin. However, we would never use that word to describe someone because of the negative association with the word. Retarded is the same thing. Yes, someone being mentally retarded is technically correct, but the word retarded is associated with something being stupid or bad and has become a slur.
Im sure many of you will say that example is apples and oranges, |
Could you say she has "cognitive delays"? Seems to describe the issue without added negative connotations. |
Did you call the police? |
| FFS, OP is a troll. Let's not feed the d-bag troll. |
| I will continue to use the word retarded correctly, and not in a insulting negative sense. |
Is this the "funny troll"? |
|
OP is jealous
OP also wants a child with downs |
Unfortunately, the OP set the tone for this thread his or herself by questioning why this person had a handicapped tag with no "obvious" reason. Rather than inquiring why this could happen in a genuinely curious way, s/he asks WTF? Apparently, if a handicap is not visible to him/her, it can't exist. Many of us who are familiar with handicaps less obvious than a broken leg tried to tell her/him what some of those causes could be. The question could have been handled in a more civilized way if the OP had shown any respect for the driver of the vehicle. After OP's judgmental post, everything went down hill. If you need me, I'll be sitting on my front porch with my lawyer waiting for the FBI to come by.

I feel like I'm watching the "I'm taking it back" bit from Clerks 2. Only less funny. |
nothing in Clerks 2, or anything from the vile Kevin Smith, is funny. However, there is nothing wrong with using the word "retarded" correctly. And if anyone gives you a hard time about using it correctly, then it is their problem. |
