GMU part-time MBA is fine if you are staying in DC...Smith and Georgetown are the best programs in the area and far and away may levels up from the likes of Strayer or GMU or Phoenix -- but even UMd. and Georgetown MBAs do not result in the kind of jobs that will send you to McKinsey or Goldman. I would stay put. |
According to the couselor at Langley (this is only Langley, not all of Va), the avg SATs (M and V only) for the top 5 publics are:
1. WM 1420 3.8 UW 2. UVA 1390 3.8 UW 3. VT 1210 3.6 UW 4. JMU 1190 3.7 UW 5. UMW 1140 3.7 UW For some reason GMU was not on the list but she said it was just below 1100 and 3.0 UW |
Per Kiplinger W and M and UVA rank top 10, JMU is #20 and VPI is #28 among all public colleges in the nation according to the link. All cost within 1000 dollars per year of one another. |
Study hard for that useless jmu degree |
I guess it depends. I wouldn't bet the average comms major at any of the VA Public schools makes tons of money...but generally the majority of students at all VA Public Universities study Business. According Business Week, JMU Grads earn more than you might realize. According to http://www.businessweek.com/interactive_reports/ugtable_3-20.html#r=lr-sr graduates of the Top 50 National Schools in Business (from UVa, W&M, U of R, JMU and Va Tech in that order) all graduate with Jobs paying fairly high salaries: http://www.businessweek.com/interactive_reports/ugtable_3-20.html#r=lr-sr |
Wow. Not the OP or PP, but I resemble that remark! I went to James Madison for undergrad before Law School at Georgetown. I actually think JMU was a challenging and stimulating place to spend 4 (ok 5) years, and I realize it was back in the 1990s, but JMU was a pretty selective back then. My DS is headed to Rutgers, but noticed the attacks on GMU. I think GMU is a much better school than people are giving credit. don't know about CS though... |
Unfortunately GMU is in a state with lots of great schools. They will be listed as behind UVA, W&M, VA Tech then it is a toss up for the rest of the public schools.
GMU's past reputation is hard to get rid off. There will always be people who remember it as a "commuter" school or a school where you went to as a last resort. GMU is trying very hard to change the perception. If you haven't been on campus lately, you should vist. |
UVA is clearly number one. C of W &M is clearly number two. After that, it is becoming a toss up and program-dependent. I think Tech's desireability among students has dropped since the shootings. DD who is an in-state junior refuses to even visit for that reason, and some of her friends feel the same way. Meanwhile both JMU and GMU have both made great strides in reputation lately. A lot has to do with the individual programs at each school and not such-and-such a school is #4 or #5 in Virginia. |
Does any employer hire lib arts from w l that don't have a masters |
English, please. |
...says the person with no idea what he/she is talking about.... |
I wouldnT be quick to rate vt as a league above jmu or even for that matter gmu. The question of who is 4 or 5 is probably about gum and tech because The rankings suggest jmu is marginally better respected than vt and vt is marginally better respected than gmu. |
Are you a jmu grad? |
Nonsense. The battle between 4 and 5 is between Tech and GMU. JMU actually more consistently comes up as the best ranking of the three. Even UMW is more selective than VT... |
For the JMU booster, please, no one puts JMU ahead of VT. As for VT "desirability", you know the number of applications have gone up every year since the shootings, right? DS was a high school junior at the time and only hoped that apps would decline. Here's the ranking: UVA/W&M . . VA Tech . . . . . . . JMU/GMU/ UMW . . CNU |
