But the entering Freshman at Tech and JMU have higher GPA's and SAT scores.

tech yes, JMU, barely different than GMU

JMU SATs are higher...JMU GPAs are MUCH higher...like 3.9 for JMU vs. 3.4 for GMU. Also DDs counselor stated that GMU SATs were an anomaly and that for the class of 2016 tthe average dropped to its typical 1050 average...a major drop of about 70 points...

DD was rejected by JMU but got into VT and GMU. She will go to GMU, live at home, and transfer to JMU because it has a much better business school.

There is a huge gap in reputation between these two schools.

Why not other VA schools like VPI or JMU if not UVA or WM?

For academics Gmu is better then jmu, kids want to go to jmu to be farther away from parents and party.

For the PP who said "New Brunswick is kinda gross" - have you actually been to Rutgers' New Brunswick campus? I know a lot of people have a knee-jerk reaction to NJ but Rutgers-New Brunswick is actually more "college-y" feeling and attractive campus than GMU.

Actually Fairfax City is kind of gross. Plus GMU is like a commuter college built in the 1970s while rutgers is a little more serious a school.

GMU is better for academics. But for a good time, JMU wins by a mile.

Jmu has never been in the same category as uva or wm. As of the last 5 years Gmu is now a comparable to jmu and even tech. its not 1998 anymore, things have changed.

Sure...it's not 1998...it's 2013. And the 2013 Kiplinger has UVA #2, WM #10, JMU #20 and VPI # 28

These are the only va schools in the top 50.

Unless you're confusing acronyms again...or drinking while posting.

Hope this helps.
