Rutgers or GMU

Amazing how a GMU thread was taken over by a VPI booster.

Not the PP but since the publics all cost with $500 dollars of each other, why does that distinction matter? Plus this ranking is not inconsistent with other rankings -- all of which show UVA/W&M as top 10 Publics; JMU/VT as top 25; and none of which even register GMU....

Posting twice doesn't make it so. Plus, no W&M? OK, we believe you now. . . .

You should. It was an accident, I am sure you never make them.

And the lack of W&M was a typo...

UVa was ranked #2 in the nation,
W&M #4,
JMU #20 and
VA Tech at #28.

No other Va Schools were in the top 50.

Let me repeat that.

No other Va Schools were in the top 50. Not VCU..not GMU...not UMW....

These are facts not opinions. Try them sometime.

You sound like the same poster, but in any event you are making up facts now. The tuition at VA schools varies by more than $500. For example for 2012-13 William and Mary tuition is $13,500 this year. Mary Washington is 9,200. Housing costs vary even more. Kiplingers rates value, not quality.

JMU tuition was $8808 this year. Housing is $3938! That, my friends, is great value.

Housing costs at the upper quad at Tech is a ridiculous $2000/ year. With costs like that VA Tech can compete on value with anyone.

This is an odd construction, methinks. Are you saying that UVA, WM, JMU and VT are not Quality Schools?

First, if you examine the methodology -- it is not true that this ranking does not measure "quality". Second, they look at "In State Rates" all of which are within $500 of each other.

Third, the methodology looks at graduation rate, quality of the incoming freshman class -- all the same factors any other ranking looks at.

So I ask you...is the fact that JMU and VT are both in the top 30 and GMU is not in the top 50 evidence that GMU is "Equivalent" to either VT or JMU?

Besides, here's another ranking that might help you lose the confusion:

You got a point. VT and JMU don't look all that impressive but you have a point, though I wish everyone would lay off the GMU bashing...it may not be JMU or VT YET....but I bet ity will be in the next decade or so.,..

That's not real impressive, but I have to admit to being shocked to see VT and JMU rank above Penn State and Maryland-College Park....this says that VA has 4 schools (UVa, WM, VT, JMU) that outrank the flagship Universities of neighboring states Maryland and Pennsyslvania....Four!! That is the real value.

So VT is higher ranked than JMU? Of course it is; there's only one person here who thinks otherwise.

You forgot to mention that VT and JMU outrank Rutgers as well...so add NJ to the list. The existence of so many quality schools on the cheap is why we moved to VA in the first place...only to find my DS did not get into any of these four and went to Dickinson College, which costs 5 times as much. Yeesh.

Our DS went out of state as well when he realized he could get into much better colleges OOS than in state. (Regarding JMU, he asked "why in the world would I want to go to college in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do but get drunk and have random sex?") I'm happily paying the extra $12,000 it's costing us per year.

1 person huh? I doubt it based on the number of folks who turn down Tech to go to Madison every year.

The reality is that these two schools are pretty much in the same league, with one being better than the other only depending on particular circumstance. For example, Business is one of the top populated degrees at both schools...#1 in fact in terms of number of students at each.

Wanna see how the top ranked undergraduate Business Schools in VA fare?

Let's see:

Top 50 Business Schools (DC/MD/VA only):

2 University of Virginia (McIntire)
14 Georgetown University (McDonough)
15 University of Richmond (Robins)
25 College of William & Mary (Mason)
32 James Madison University
38 University of Maryland (Smith)

Wait...I see UVa, W&M, JMU but....no VT?

Apparenltly I am not the only person in the world after all. But to be fair, now you can pull some football ranking and tie this up. But since I have no dog in this fight (but find its hilarious to see "the VPI booster" go apesh1t) it won't much matter.

Good day.

They're not. Rutgers is far more prestigious.

Anonymous wrote:Unfortunately GMU is in a state with lots of great schools. They will be listed as behind UVA, W&M, VA Tech then it is a toss up for the rest of the public schools.

GMU's past reputation is hard to get rid off. There will always be people who remember it as a "commuter" school or a school where you went to as a last resort. GMU is trying very hard to change the perception. If you haven't been on campus lately, you should vist.

You didn't really just group VT with UVA and W&M did you? Silly rabbit.

Besides...why would a Va Tech grad lurk a forum about GMU? Upset that we're more selective than you?

Are you a jmu grad?

No, George Mason Class of '09. CS too.

Why do you ask?
