So sorry you feel this way. I can empathize with you. In my opinion only, I think many YY parents encounter "psychos" because sadly (yes, stereotyping here), most YY parents don't simply show excitement about their school. they tend to take a step further. They seem to have an elitist aura about themselves. As noted earlier, the parent's think that Chinese is a "luxury" language. So that is easy for other parents, in their defensive mode, to target them about not being adequate in other areas. YY sounds like a great school. Would I ever consider sending my little one there? No, but that is a personal decision for my family not having any interest in Chinese. I know personally that there are some great parents at YY. It's unfortunate that the "bad" apples give the entire school a bad rap for having crazy parents. I guess, if/when other parents start to bash my school, I'l have a sticks and stones approach, because only you know what does on inside those walls....which vary class to class and even student to student. However, I will do my best to tackle any wrong reputations about my school.
FYI--I am the pp poster ithat stated, "Chinese is a considered a luxury language". I was not speaking for the parent body, this was something I read while researching the surge of Chinese Immersion in American schools. So please do not take that the statement as an elitest statement, or a direct quote from any parent or staff member. I am a new YY parent, and I am taking it day by day just like all PK parents on this board. If YY does not meet the needs of my family, I will re-enter the lottery just like everyone else. So far, have not witnessed this elitist aura you are describing from the parents I have met. I guess as IT grows, you will probably encounter someone making the same statements to you that are making about YY parents!

Just read any YY post. You will notice that most of them have an elitist sentiment.

I'm not surprised there's been so much movement at the early grades this year -- between Yu Ying, LAMB, and AppleTree expanding & Mundo Verde and Inspired Teaching opening up, there are a lot more spots for PS/PKers this year in the charters.

I can only imagine what this will mean for traditional DCPS enrollment 5, 10 years from now...

In addition, YY admin clearly has a"my way or the high way" approach that turns people off.

Also, just for the record...the deciding factor for my family to attend YY, was the pending IB PYP certification, not Chinese (but we considered the language a plus)

As stated, I am a new YY parent (less than a week). I must admit, I researched the language aspect, and I have not read the historical YY forums. You could be very right in what you are saying, I just have not witnessed it at this point. I am excited about the school, and I really hope my child has found the school that best meet her needs. Not excited about trying the lottery again next year.......but we will if we have to.

This is just so untrue. If you go looking for elitism that's what you'll see but seriously most of them are not like that at all! I'm sure I speak for all YY parents (and all parents generally!) when I say that we just want our school to succeed. When people insult it it's hard not to bristle. I guess maybe this bristling can sound elitist because it's hard not to assume that people who make these kinds of generalizations are ignorant even beyond their comments on this board.

Question: so with the charters expanding this year, do you think it increases or decreases K slots for next year? Say for instance YY, will there be 108 slots next year for PK, or was this a 1 time deal?
Anonymous
YY's mega PK class was a one time deal to pay for and fill their new building.

Chinese immersion is considered a luxury language. So for the most part, it is going to appeal to your middle,upper-middle, affluent socioeconomic classes. I would place more value in this years DC-CAS scores, since last year was the very first year of school testing for YY.

Yeah let my little one have the luxury of learning Chinese while he can be mediocre at math, science and English. That makes a whole lot of sense. I am upper middle class, maybe I missed that lesson.
yes, you totally missed the lesson, so I wont go there if you dont get it! Supplementation will be needed no matter what school you attend. I think it is safe to say our YY children will be just as prepared as your little dumpling to face the world, if not more!

Not if your little one can't do math!
you have jokes, but we are talking about middle/upper middle class families, so most will supplement, if they need to...lets wait until next year's DC-CAS scores. Beauvoir kids paying $30K a year, attend Kumon due to math weaknesses...so what are you really saying???? As a parent, you do what you have to do.....

For YY, next year there will continue to be 108 slots for Kindergarten, but the size of that class (6 sections of 18) is a one time deal. Entering in 2012-13, there are projected to be 72 slots, 4 sections of 18. Given the swap English/Chinese days, each grade will need an even number of sections.

This year, ~25 or 30 of the 108 slots were taken by siblings. School population was about 230 with 25 or 30 siblings. Next year, the school population will be larger, ~350. So probably 35 or 40 siblings, so only ~30 non sibling slots will be available for preK in 2012-13.

There is also conversation about starting preS3 in 2012-13.

If there is supplementing going on then why isn't reflected in the testing? Are you saying they weren't supplementing before and now they will begin so next year's scores will reflect accordingly? Why weren't the parents supplementing from the beginning?

Honestly, I really don't have anything against Yu Ying. I suspect it's a great school. What I can't understand though is how every string ends up as a discussion about Yu Ying. It's maddening.

If you have an opinion about Inspired Teaching please post here. If you want to discuss Yu Ying there are thousands of strings on DCUM to pick from.

I am a new parent, so I dont know if supplementing was done last year/this year at all. I was making a general statement that parents supplement when needed. I made the statement to wait until next year's DC-CAS scores because this was the school's first testing, with the very first group of YY kids....I hope parents will supplement their kids education no matter what school they attend, if it appears their school of choice is weak in an area, or if the child is temporarily lagging in a subject---

Yup. What will happen when those PK siblings can't get in to YY in a few years? Maybe they expect a lot to leave.

Thank you! I'd been seeing a lot of comments about how every thread in this forum eventually turns into a discussion about YY...and now I've seen it in action. This thread is supposed to be about IT. Hello?
