I agree with most of this except the black/white assessment. If the city is approx 50% black, this is not necessarily accurate. From my observation, the black makeup is about 30%. However, it is still very diverse.

Definitely agree the lower grades seem to be more white kids, but I think the upper grades are the opposite.

PP you quoted. You are absolutely right. I stand corrected.

NP here. Anyway, overall the school is quite diverse--and more importantly, awesome!!

YY's English and Math scores are at 62% and 57%. Not acceptable for a lot of people.

I have no idea about YY, but from what I have seen at IT, all the teachers are fabulous! Very dedicated, very good with communication, and very invested in the needs of the students. All the children I have seen (including my own,) seem eager to get to school in the morning, and have smiles on their faces when they leave. Kudos to the teachers and the administration!

Chinese immersion is considered a luxury language. So for the most part, it is going to appeal to your middle,upper-middle, affluent socioeconomic classes. I would place more value in this years DC-CAS scores, since last year was the very first year of school testing for YY.

Yeah let my little one have the luxury of learning Chinese while he can be mediocre at math, science and English. That makes a whole lot of sense. I am upper middle class, maybe I missed that lesson.

IT apparently has openings in PK4, K, & 2nd grade, if anyone is interested.

I have two kids at IT this year. I would urge anyone considering a change to take the opportunity! It really is a very special place with the most talented teachers I've seen anywhere. My kids transitioned without a tear and have a hop in their step every morning on the way to school. I had spots available at Stokes and Yu Ying and don't regret my decision AT ALL.

IT parents, your school sounds fantastic and seems like it will only get better. I have a suggestion though--consider tempering your enthusiasm on this board because eventually the psychos will decide you're way too happy and start bashing you to smithereens.

I'm surprised to hear about pre-k openings. I wonder if Yu Ying letting in so many pre-k 4ers has really helped move waitlist in many of the popular charters.

So sorry you feel this way. I can empathize with you. In my opinion only, I think many YY parents encounter "psychos" because sadly (yes, stereotyping here), most YY parents don't simply show excitement about their school. they tend to take a step further. They seem to have an elitist aura about themselves. As noted earlier, the parent's think that Chinese is a "luxury" language. So that is easy for other parents, in their defensive mode, to target them about not being adequate in other areas. YY sounds like a great school. Would I ever consider sending my little one there? No, but that is a personal decision for my family not having any interest in Chinese. I know personally that there are some great parents at YY. It's unfortunate that the "bad" apples give the entire school a bad rap for having crazy parents. I guess, if/when other parents start to bash my school, I'l have a sticks and stones approach, because only you know what does on inside those walls....which vary class to class and even student to student. However, I will do my best to tackle any wrong reputations about my school.

There was some last minute changes. Pre-K might be full again so if interested, call. This is the year to get in because it will be difficult next year. (Maybe even some YY families will apply who decide it's not for them.)

yes, you totally missed the lesson, so I wont go there if you dont get it! Supplementation will be needed no matter what school you attend. I think it is safe to say our YY children will be just as prepared as your little dumpling to face the world, if not more!

Not if your little one can't do math!

FYI--I am the pp poster ithat stated, "Chinese is a considered a luxury language". I was not speaking for the parent body, this was something I read while researching the surge of Chinese Immersion in American schools. So please do not take that the statement as an elitest statement, or a direct quote from any parent or staff member. I am a new YY parent, and I am taking it day by day just like all PK parents on this board. If YY does not meet the needs of my family, I will re-enter the lottery just like everyone else. So far, have not witnessed this elitist aura you are describing from the parents I have met. I guess as IT grows, you will probably encounter someone making the same statements to you that are making about YY parents!
