Hmm, generous. Sorry, but still don't support the sampling.

I agree with this. The thought that someone was previously groveling around in the fruit that I am selecting from is distasteful. What if they lick their fingers and then dive in for another taste? Yuck. If the store offers free samples, that is one thing. Otherwise it sounds unsanitary as well as rude.

Yes, it is unsanitary. So is pushing a grocery cart that others have touched. Or opening a door. Or wiping your butt. That is why you are supposed to wash your hands every once in a while, not to mention any produce before consuming it. Or do you just want to ban any of the above mentioned unsanitary activities?

Gross. That is why I prefer to buy fruit that has not been mauled by the masses with their germy hands. But go ahead and nibble on unwashed fruit at the grocery store if you insist. Just pray that the grapes and cherries you sample are not contaminated with E. Coli as other produce has been found to be.

How can you possibly know what happens to the fruit you buy between the time it leaves the tree and comes to you. I have worked in many top restaurants over the years, and you would be shocked to see how food is treated. You are living in a fantasy world.

Ahh, I believe you have missed the point I was trying to make. I would NOT be shocked. That is why I would never eat unwashed fruit from the grocery store.

What is the "store for poors"? I know it references another thread but can someone provide a quick definition or link? Thanks.

I sample grapes and cherries before buying them. I do not open plastic containers of fruits to sample them. I don't see it as a big deal, since as PPs noted, sometimes those fruits can be sour and therefore a waste of money. I do not sample corn kernels.

Do you wash them before eating them?

NP here. You can defend yourself all you want, your paws on my food are one less thing I could do without. Given your attitude, one can only surmise what you are so defensive about, and it aint pretty.

By this age, you have not been grocery shopping enough to know decent fruit by site? Where the hell were you raised? Ew.

OK to sample: Cherries, grapes.
Not OK: Blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, bananas, oranges, applies, pineapples, watermelon, cantalopes, lemons, limes, grapefruit, coconut, honeydew.

You don't buy fruit by "site". You buy it by smell, touch and yes, taste. And I was raised in a place where people know how to spell. Ew.

When did they invent a different species of human with no autoimmune system? I'm so sorry for all of you that live in a bubble that your life is seriously at risk from eating a single unwashed grape. It must be horrifying.

Luckily, I come from the previous version of human, which has an immune system that actually works. In fact, I get sick less often from a healthy low level exposure to contaminants. My DS is from the same model. He licks doorknobs. I laugh and say "Stay strong son!"

You know, sometimes I pick up an apple, I touch it with my filthy diseased paws, and then I decide not to buy that one and put it back, for someone else--maybe YOU--to buy and eat!

Muahahahhaa!

Yes, but the difference is that I wash the fruit that has been touched by you before I eat it. So muahahaha yourself.

At 5.99 a pint at Whole Foods, I have learned the hard way to sample 1 or 2 blueberries before I buy.

Thre's a sign at my Giant grocery store that says "Graze Freely." I never noticed it until my toddler ate a banana for the first time while I was shopping. I apologized to the cashier and offered to pay for 2 bananas. He pointed to the sign and said some to this effect: "we expect people to sample the produce -- especially little kids who might otherwise be getting rowdy and disturbing other shoppers."

Do you have ANY idea how many hands touch your produce before it ends up in the grocery store? Do you think the field workers carry around hand sanitizer?

Really. Tell me what to look for to pick out a good honey dew or cantaloupe without touching it. I want to know, since the rest of the world thumps them and smells the stem.
