Sampling fruits in produce section

Anonymous
I've happen to see this more than once in a supermarket, where a patron will sample the fruit. The other day in Costco, for example, a woman opened up a box of cherries, and tasted one. Usually this type of thing would happen with smaller fruit (like cherries, or grapes), but I especially don't think it's fair/right to open a closed box and take a sample. We all have to take our chances with fruit now and then, not knowing if it'll be the best taste. I'd probably be more forgiving if say the person did go on to actually buy that box, but if s/he just closes it and moves on, not sure I can support that.

Chefs do this all of the time, but generally ask the produce guy for a sample or his advice on what is good that day.

The other day at Giant, I saw a man stand in the produce and take several samples from a bag of grapes.

They did this on prime time: what would you do?
Only they took it further by having the customers using whipped cream on the strawberries they were eating.

I'd say something to the person, and/or complain to management.

I ALWAYS give my kids either an apple or banana to eat while I shop. I don't consider it sampling though since they always eat 100% of it and I always pay for it.

I only do this on alternate days, MWF. On T/Th/Sa, I peel back the husks on ears of corn and then throw the corn back on the pile.

How do you know what the apple or banana weighed, 15:46, since you pay for them by weight?

How do you pay for it if they've already eaten it? Those are items that are typically sold by weight.

PP, that's an excellent question to 15:46, I'm curious about that, too.

This is behavior best confined to the store for poors.

Many years ago, in high school, I was a cashier at a grocery store. More people than you would think eat while they shop. I would just take an apple (or whatever) out of the bag and ring it up again. Not that difficult.

At Trader Joes they are by quantity, not weight. This is where we shop with the kids.

Really? Eating an apple while I shop at Trader Joes makes me shopping at a store for poors?

You know, this topic comes up so often. And I believe that the fruit manager at at least one major chain...Safeway or Giant or one of those has gone on camera as saying that the store is HAPPY to have customers sample a grape or cherry or whatever it is before they buy. Lighten up, Gertrude.
