I grew up in Potomac and now live in Rockville.
Potomac sucks. When I was little it was mostly farm land and there were only a handful of mansions. Once I got to high school, I had to deal with stuck up, "entitled" kids who were totally self absorbed. Being different meant being outcasted...it was really sad to see sometimes. |
| grew up in Arlington. Couldn't wait to leave and ran off to CA. But now I'm back and love it. |

I grew up in Reston and overseas because of my dad's military job. After college in Virginia I lived overseas, then moved back to DC proper and have moved further west in VA as I've gotten married and have kids. I use to live in Clarendon and now live in Arlington but in a more suburban area.
If you'd told me as a kid that I'd live in the VA suburbs as an adult, I would have thought you were lying because I would have thought they were so boring. But I like the location for my home and it really works for my family now. I couldn't live further out though--that'd be more like where I lived in Reston, for some reason! |
Funny! My FIL lives in Pikesville and we seem to spend a lot of football season at Jilly's. Eeeeck!! My DH grew up in Howard County and I grew up in Chicago. I would LOVE to live in DC again as I did when I was single but nothing beats Chicago!! I lived on the North side a few blocks from Wrigley Field, close to the lake, close to Lincoln Park Zoo, close to Michigan Avenue. It hurts when we go back to visit because I miss it so much Our family also has a cabin near Eagle River, WI so I spent many summers there as a child. I would move there in a heart beat too!
Now, we are in bland old Gaithersburg/Rockville off 370. There is nothing nearby to walk to, no sidewalks, no yummy restaurants unless we get in the car. I do not like it one bit. |
| Grew up in Western Mass. but have been in Arlington for the past 9 years (after 4 years in DC for college - go GDub!) |
| Northern NJ born and bred, school in upstate NY, then to DC area (initially Arlington and Falls Church, now married with kids in Rockville) |
| I grew up in SE we lived in Barry Farms then moved to Potomac Gardens. Later on we moved to 13th and Park Rd NW- Columbia Heights. Of course then the neighborhood was poor, dirty and not trendy like it is now. Now I live in Fort Washington MD |
Fellow Potomac gal here. Definitely sucked...though not sure other affluent suburbs would have been any better. Adolesence probably anywhere just sucks! I live in Bethesda now and love it.

| I grew up in Arlington near 7 corners/EFC metro. I liked and still like the big array of shopping...from fru fru stores to discount stores to ethnic markets. Like being close to the metro, widely diverse neighborhoods and restaurants, and walking across Key Bridge to Georgetown or the bike trail that goes to Georgetown. Love the urban feel of Ballston/Clarendon/Rosslyn and the family atmosphere of EFC area. I feel deeply rooted in Arlington as several generations of my family have resided in the same houses for decades. |
| Grew up in Wilmington, DE and now live in Bethesda. |
Where in the Bronx??? I grew up in Riverdale and then Westchester County. Now I live in Georgetown. Love it but have to make some tough decisions next year re: schools and other neighborhoods. |
| Grew up in rural Ohio and now live in Bethesda. |
| Am I the 1st Pittsburgh girl to post? Grew up in small town outside da 'burgh (Dad was lifelong Alcoa employee), came here to DC area following grad school, lived in Alexandria and Capitol Hill, now live in Fort Hunt area (south of Old Town). Yes 'burbs, but the 'burbs where I grew up were small, economically depressed, so where I live now is much nicer, so we're happy with it. |
You're not the only Pittsburgh girl! Grew up in NW PA, went to Pittsburgh for college and I stayed a few years after that. Moved to Bethesda for husband's job and we are currently in Rockville. |
| I grew up in the distant outskirts of Philadelphia in a house on an acre of woods across from a horse farm. When I was a teenager, in the early 80s, my father considered taking a job at NIH, and my parents scouted real estate in Bethesda (my father won't commute more than 10 minutes). They were horrified by the prices and how little land they'd get, and he turned down the job. But I'm more of a city person, and when my husband and I moved to Bethesda after many years in southern CA, I was delighted by a house on 0.15 acre and walking distance to a Starbucks. |
