Where did you grow up and where in the D.C. area do you now live?

I am especially curious to hear from those who grew up in D.C. or the inner burbs.

If you grew up outside D.C, can you specify what kind of city/town you lived in (small town v. large city).

I am just curious what the childhood/current geopraphic make-up of the posters on this site are.

I'm from Philly burbs (very wealthy Main Line burbs), not far from Philly - but very much insulated - like Bethesda. It was its own little world with an entirely different mindset. All white, all preppy WASPy, lots of drinking, cookie cutter, Stepford, Mean Girls types ugh. Couldn't wait to get out of there!

Live in NW DC now and am a city dweller for life!

Ouch. That Bethesda quip hurt. But I agree there's a grain of truth there. Speaking of own little worlds, if you have kids, are they in public or private school?

I grew up in NW DC. Now in insulated Bethesda.

Born and raised in Arlington, graduated from Georgetown. I now live in Loudoun County and have no desire to live any closer to the city (unless it were in Great Falls on a few acres with lots of trees between me and my neighbors).

it's not a true city until it's overpopulated with high crime rate. NW DC? city dweller wannabe.

I grew up in a suburb of Baltimore called Pikesville about 15 minutes from the Harbor. It is a suburban atmosphere and almost totally a Jewish area. I didn't want to still live there because my daughter would go to HS with all the kids of the people I went to HS with and I just don't want to be who I was when I was 10 forever. I do think it's a great place to live and grow up, but I prefer the anonymity of DC. I'm naturally a shy person and it's so much easier for me to be outgoing when I don't have to think about gossip. When I lived in Baltimore I would see people I knew everywhere. We live like a mile from where my husband went to HS and he never sees anyone he knows. I like being able to go to the grocery store in my sweats with my hair sticking up and not worry about seeing anyone I know and having everyone else know I looked like crap at the store that morning That said, I do miss some of the community feeling we had there although I still sort of get it because I visit my family often.

We now live in Gaithersburg. We may want to live in Vienna, but we don't know if we will be able to move in this market. I like living in a busy suburb. It's busier than where I grew up, but I always liked suburbs and think it's a good mix of being quiet and fast-paced in different aspects.

Funny! I grew up in Pikesville too and could have written the above post (except for the part about living a mile from where my husband grew up -- he's from Connecticut). We live in Potomac now. Kind of a little similar IMO to Pikesville but a bit more diverse.

Grew up in Atlanta (Buckhead). So bland. So pretentious.

Live in Palisades and love it. People who say Washington is pretentious and materialistic have no idea what that REALLY means...

Sorry, I don't want to deeply offend, but everyone who lives in Bethesda knows it true! lol. There are some great pockets in Bethesda (I love that neighborhood right off River Rd and Western, for example), but overall, I don't like the rich suburban thing. Grew up with it, can't stand it. True, you can get that in the city, but there's so much more diversity (and that includes all kinds - not just racial, but cultural and economic, which is a much more important kind of diversity, in my opinion). My school was filled with entitled competitive white kids. I'm a priveleged white person too, but it would have been nice to not grow up in a bubble.

As far as schools go - Our plan is public school until 8th grade (oldest is in k right now), then private school, but that's about 8 yrs away - we're hoping for many positive changes in DC schools in the next 5 years, so maybe we will do public all the way.

I grew up in NW DC (Shepherd Park). Went to DC public schools, went away for college and a couple of jobs, then came running back to the area because I just love it here. Recently moved from Arlington to Silver Spring. Being a DC native, I just couldn't buy a house and raise a family "across the river."

Wow, another Pikesville native here. Crazy.

I live in NW DC now.
