Spinoff: Teachers, what would you like to tell parents, but can't.

And teachers know that PP. We do not make the curriculum. You can thank politicians for our current standards and NCLB. I teach ES and here are some of my thoughts. First, dress your child appropriately for school (I started the thread a few months ago about this topic). Also, please check your child's take home folder/backpack/notebook/agenda, etc. Clean out this folder each night. Your child has homework every night. Make sure they do it. Sign the tests I send home. I shouldn't have to beg for them back. I cannot respond to your emails right away. I am busy teaching. If it is an easy question, I will get back to you after school. If it isn't, give me a day or two. No, I cannot answer your phone calls during the day. I MIGHT be able to call you back during your child's special but do not expect me to be able to take your call during the day. You are your child's first teacher. This doesn't stop on the first day of kindergarten. You know them better than I ever will. I want them to succeed too.

What I can't tell them: How ignorant are you to give your five year old a bag of Cheetos and a coke and call it "breakfast" ? I'm really mad at you. Now your child will be bouncing off the walls all morning. Talk about not being "ready to learn."

I have 26 students in my class this year. Next year I will have 27. The I can't provide the one on one attention to your child that you are requesting.

My African-American doctor referred to this as the "black American breakfast". It drove her crazy that people thought coke and chips was a good breakfast.

My comment on the quote isn't posting - sorry. My African American doctor called the soda and chips the "black American breakfast" and was frustrated that folks did not know better. She has worked very hard to try to educate people.

Don't talk to me like I don't "get it.". I really do. I have my own school age kids. I get it.

Are you black?

Are you black?

I am not the quoted pp, but why do you ask if she is black?

Using DCUM logic only an AA may say something such as "Black American breakfast." If PP isn't AA then, DCUM logic, she is a racist.

Actually, no. I'm just wondering why the doctor said it to her. If she's non-black and the doctor is telling her soda and chips is the black American diet, I'm wondering why she's being told this information that is irrelevant (to her) at her physical. If she's black, I'm still wondering why the doctor felt is was relevant to her- does she eat chips and soda for breakfast?

(Also, the person who said "black American breakfast" is the doctor, who is black, not the PP. Try to keep up.)

I would have been so grateful if any of DD's teachers had suggested she had ADHD before we had to figure it out ourselves. It could have saved us years.

Our DD's elementary school teachers said we were wasting our time to have DD evaluated. It was our DD's soccer coach and music teacher that suggested the evaluation, and we're so glad that they did!

Because my AA doctor wants to promote health for everyone and sees vulnerabilities in her community. FWIW, (me white)she did ask me about my diet and continues to talk to me about it because I am overweight. She and I also would talk about nutrition locally and ethnically (which is an issue for me since I, like others, have ethnic favorites that aren't the best choices.) She has been in a number of media outlets with her message.

This thread was about what would you like to say, but can't. The original poster of this comment reminded me of a conversation with my doctor. Also, FWIW, I went to a college that was 60% minority - I saw lots of people have soda and chips for breakfast. It's cheap and it isn't as unusual as you think.

Now, can we get back to the teachers?

You're the one who took it off topic...

Nice to know that someone with a Bachelor's degree suddenly can usurp someone who has a Doctorate *and* can diagnose ADHD.

I won't even comment on the substance on this but I can't ignore the form. One doesn't usurp another person. Perhaps you meant, "...a Bachelor's degree can suddenly usurp the role of someone who has a Doctorate...." And why the "suddenly"?
